It's still a pretty big "if" concerning the Sox making the playoffs. The Yankees are going to win the division; that ship has sailed. I could be eating crow in a few weeks, but I highly doubt it. And the wildcard? Texas's September schedule doesn't exactly have them facing the '27 Yankees. A 1.5 game lead, at this point, against a team that's given up the fewest runs in the AL and is playing pretty good baseball isn't a certain ticket to October. And let's not forget the Rays. Neither of these teams is going to roll over for you.
If the Sox make the playoffs, I'm not worried. The Yankees are the better team, the last month has shown us this. At the very worst, the two are even. No one cares what happened in 2004, 2003, or any other year between the start of civilization and 2009...because it will play as big a role as what I had for breakfast when it comes time to play the games. The Yankees certainly aren't scared because the Red Sox beat them in 2004...these two teams could not be any more different now than they were then. Clinging to that year like it will somehow help the team succeed is delusional.
And don't act like the Angels can only beat the Yankees. They're a great team and can beat you guys too. Once again, what happened in previous years means almost nothing. They can, and have this year, beat you guys. The Yankees aren't the only team that have to worry about, as it was so eloquently phrased, "two teams who have the ability to buttrape them at will in the playoffs." The only difference is, the concern of not getting there at all is much, much, much more realistic a possibility and concern for the Sox than the Yankees. The Sox will have to put it all out on the table to go for the division and maintain that wild card lead...which begs the question, what will be left if they're playing in October?
Granted, anything could happen. Detroit will end up in the World Series and we'll all be scratching our heads. :dunno:
