  1. No arguement here, Ortiz is a great hitter. But I think most of the voters look at " a complete " meaning defense and offense. My guess is Manny would get more votes.
  2. 2 tickets to each game. My bad, didn't state 2 tickets in the 21st giveaway. Edited and corrected. Sept. 20 2 tickets Sept. 21 2 tickets
  3. Well I'm still a newbie too. Great to have you aboad and look forward to posting with you. PS: you might want to try posting in this thread also : http://www.talksox.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3971
  4. I'll help if a can also.
  5. I thought the same thing, but I went by the link above . http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/NASApp...an.jsp?c_id=bos
  6. I can see at least three spots that could be opened : Remlinger, Miller, and . Mantei.
  7. What did I say ? Simply put if you got the money you spend it. If you look at the value ( what its worth if sold )of the Yankees since George has taken over, its grown has been astronomical. To a a lesser extent, the same can also be said of the Sox. In both cases, the Sox and the Yanks have other assets, the chief of these being their respective networks ( NESN YES ). This gives both a huge advantage over other teams. Because the profit from those enterprises aren't held against them under the MLB revenue sharing rules. Simply put both teams can show losses without losing money.
  8. yup, he' definately on my list. Any others ? I bet Stern will get over that injury in the first few days of September. I also will be interested to see what they do with Miller. I believe that as long as they put him on the post season list while on DL, they gain flexibility on the 40 man and post season rosters.
  9. In business, a better run business will allocate whatever resources are needed to achieve their budgeted goals. Meaning, if the result is net profit , you cut expenses as neccesary while trying to increase sales. If its net growth, you expand market share and acuqire tangible and intangible assets. Last time I checked MLB is a business, and in the East the two most succcessful teams are the Sox and the Yanks ( only exception is when Gerge goes a little wacko- in fairest to George if you got it then why not use it - got to met him a number of years ago really a pretty nice guy, if you don't work for him ).
  10. It's getting close and we've all been watching or reading about our favorite players in the minors. So who gets called up ? Factor that in with who gets put on the Post Season eligable roster.
  11. Davis hasn't done anything yet, and he's got only 2 games to do it. Remember, this is the NFL, it doesn't cost squat to look at a player. You bring him in take a look see, and if he sucks he's gone. He' not bad, you shuffle between special teams, DL, practice squad.
  12. Whoaa. You can't even begin to compare these two sports. First of all, the NFL has done a tremedous job marketing and promoting their product. They kept weak market teams out of the league. The resultant contract that they received, were and are, tremendous. These amounts are distributed among the teams differently and result in a more fair allocation to each team. The draft system is totally different. The NFL can draft someone in the first several rounds ( or lower ) and have a resonable expectation of having them contribute in the first year or two ( dependent on postion ). MLB a draft pict is a prospect as we all know. This results in teams having a costly farm system. Finally, the players agreement is way different. If an NFL team cuts/ releases a player that's it they're off the hook ( expection of signing bonus ). In MLB , the team is going to be stuck with the contract. This makes a major difference. I won't even get into MLB quote other income disparity for teams that own networks ( Sox- NESN, Yanks- YES ) .
  13. Well isn't that part of the manager's job... to motivate his players. A manager can't play in the field, he can only TRY and put players in the situation to win. Part of that is the starting line-up, part substitutions, part rest ( to keep fresh ), and part motivation / trust ( they got to trust and want to play for the guy- with exceptions of a few professionals that'll play hard anyway ).
  14. Yup, only nine more days left to set the rosters, barring the slip them through on the DL rule.
  15. I might point out, that since Tito has been here we won a World Series and we're in 1st place show me anyother Red Sox manger that has done the same. There's one in NY that has done the same for their team ( but he's not available ).
  16. Agreed. Not to mention, they're a " small market team " he's not cheap to acquire or keep.
  17. I guess it will be delayed a bit ( see Hansen thread ).
  18. That's good and bad. I feel like a kid that didn't get that special Christmass present, but I always know there's a birthday coming up. The FO knows more than us, so they must have their reasons.
  19. They got to be using Hansen in either set-up or closer role.
  20. I thought was the stated plan. I'd pitch one or two times over the weekend , and if all went well, he'd be called up Tuesday. I'm really psched to see what he can do.
  21. Millar gets points for at least being realistic. I hope his attitude does change after a few weeks of riding the pine.
  22. Hello CaptainDave ! Welcome aboard.
  23. I think the Sox obviously will wiat and see what the kids can do. This will be great Hot Stove talk though.
