  1. It taks our bullpen just minutes to ruin a perfectly good happy hour.
  2. Is this the "Official 2006 Chicago Cubs Thread" :-) How on earth do any of you catch the Cubs on TV? Since WGN was taken off the Boston area cable systems, I haven't seen my cubbies live in years unless I go to Wrigley. CB, I just noticed your location. Do they still drink caine, lime & soda down there? Enjoy. Some of the best looking birds on the planet are in Capetown.
  3. If history is any guide, the same way they have over the years to similar milestones for other players. Standing Ovation.
  4. The explaination was that the ball hit the knob on the bat. :thumbdown
  5. C: But I also take into account their performance since the prior All Star Game too. I hate it when players have a fantastic 1st half (e.g. Matt Clement), make the team, then drop from star to also ran. If, like football, the game was at the end of the season, they wouldn't have made the team at all.
  6. My bother-in-law moved to Denver recently. When we visit, I want to get to Coors. This is the type of info I was hoping to get when starting the thread. I'll make a point of seeing at least an evening game on the 1st base side.
  7. Hey, I've been to the site of the Polo Grounds. Dad took me there when I was a teen. It was a bit depressing in a way. So much history in that spot, now gone forever. I'm glad I took the time to go there though. When my dad retired, my bothers and I returned the favor by taking him to Wrigley for a weekend. It is the last place still standing (besides Fenway) from when he was young. Makes a great Fathers Day present too.
  8. If you get a chance, before some fool knocks it down, go to Wrigley Field. Its best if see a day game, mid week, when all the rest of the fools are still working. Of all the places I've been, this park comes the closest to our beloved Fenway. Follow the crowd after the game to Murphy's Bleachers.
  9. What other ballparks have you been to? Did you enjoy it? Is it worth the trip (or time if you are already in that area?) Is the place even still there? Is baseball still played there?
  10. Been to the Bronx of late? It ain't what it used to be
  11. I disagree with your premise. I plan on being alive more than 25 more years. This will happen over my dead body. The same for Wrigley :-)
  12. Lowell Connector?
  13. The curse of A-Rod. I put this curse on them. I did this back when A-Rod didn't come to Boston, and elected to go to NY instead the same year.
  14. He probably went to visit a sick kid
  15. I agree with this, but he was great (undefeated?) until he was suspended. In Cincy however, he is "the star", not so in Boston. Also, the Sox have a long history of trading All Stars (I remember the Sparky Lyle for Danny Cater deal.) This could be just the thing for Arroyo's future. No question, the Reds are going to fall. Just like Baltimore last year. (Full disclosure, I'm a Cub fan too - Love Wrigley and, until 2004, liked my misery each fall in both leagues!) Arroryo can lose 20 in Cincy, but still have All Star stats if he pitches well. I don't think the team matters much in this area.
  16. I think its fun watching both
  17. Do you think that Bronson Arroyo makes the All Star Team? The NL team that is, unless Theo works more magic and gets him back too I say he would start if it wasn't for Maddux right now.
  18. No - because the game will be rained out.
  19. Not to mention, he seems to hit well against the Yankees.
  20. Is execution for treason an option? :-) Seriously, I like good baseball. I'm in the first AB, standing ovation camp. After that, treat him like any other Yankee. When players make great plays, I (like 99.999% of the Boston fans) cheer. And this isn't limited to baseball. Remember the SO given to Magic when he retired from the Lakers? How about (for those old enough) the "Beat LA" chant when Philly/Dr-J knocked the Celtics out of the playoffs? Boston fans know sports, and are a class act. I expect nothing less tonight.
  21. WEEI is suggesting that Doug Mirabelli is flying to Boston today. There is a press conference scheduled for late this afternoon. Anyone know what's up?
  22. At what co$t though? Remember, we're talking when Foulke is a FA, not now. By that time, there may be a few of Papelbon's old friends from AAA ready for that role. Not to mention off season moves. Put another way, if someone makes a better offer.... se ya at the 2004 WS reunions in 2014/2024 Keith.
  23. For the most part, the shift seems to happen only when there is nobody on base. Certainly not with RISP; a guy on 2ed could walk to 3rd! I conceed that "bunt" is too strong a suggestion - but it did help get the point across in the post. Hitting anything to the left side will suffice.
  24. Besides leading off an inning, the shift shows up less when we have men on base, especially with RISP. So another part of the problem is that Ortiz comes to bat with no runners on far too often.
  25. Given that Papi bunted again yesterday when faced with the shift, I'd like to revisit this thread. I think that the more often Papi bunts, the sooner people will not shift against him. At a minimum, when he leads off the inning, why not just take the base? Does anyone happen to know what is BA is against the shift? If it was high, I doubt teams would use that defense. One catagory that cost him the MVP last year was his BA. If he is closer to .400 than .300, there is one less excuse to not vote for the DH as MVP.
