  1. I posted this in another thread, but it belongs here. It is in regards to assessing what Theo did for the team at the deadline. IMO, Theo was definitely aspleep at the wheel this trading season. Maybe not asleep at the wheel, perhaps more like delusions of grandeur prevented him from doing anything beneficial. I'm not pleased.
  2. I think it's reasonable to wonder why a move wasn't made for Oliver Perez when starting pitching has been the Achilles' heel. He hasn't been good with the changed mechanics and resultant loss of velocity this year, but if you are making a run, let him chuck it for a couple of months and hope for the best. I find it hard to believe that they couldn't have put a package together that was more appealing than Xavier Nady without giving up who they really want to keep. f***, that team took on Shawn Chacon. I think he was trying to do something too big and too grand, and he missed out on smaller opportunities to help the club.
  3. Youk could at least be optioned down to get regular playing time. I like Tito, a bit, but if Kapler gets more PT than WMP, he needs to go.
  4. Boomer needs a little incentive.... http://img.groundspeak.com/cache/5b9a6bdd-db33-4d46-8027-a2a6a9aafb4c.jpg http://www.stargazette.com/blogs/genx/scanandplan/uploaded_images/beer-766877.jpg
  5. Steroid speculation about a pitcher losing velocity is pretty unwarranted, IMO. Pitching velocity is as much flexibility and efficient motion as it is about strength. Besides, Perez altered his mechanics in order to reduce what the Pirates deemed a violent delivery, and that is likely what did it.
  6. Using PECOTA cards, I have it at 66.4%. The non-attrition rates are 86% for Schilling, 83% for Wells, 100% for Lester, 100% for Wake, 93% for Beckett. Those are 5 independent variables, so: .86 * .83 * 1 * 1 * .93 = .6638 Of course, it doesn't help when Wake's 0% attrition rate is certainly wrong.
  7. If only somebody would remind us there's an hour left.
  8. No doubt, RF isn't perfect. FRAA is a better stat, and it uses a combination of RF, ZR, and F% in it's calculation........but you don't believe in FRAA -- although you do believe in its components -- still having a tough time with that one. Again, I'll concede he's average to alleviate your angst. That doesn't change my mind about his expendability, though. He's the least vital cog to the lineup, IMO. And, the fatal flaw to this team is starting pitching. If he is part of a package that brings back an impact starter, then "Nice knowing you, Mark. Sorry we had to let you go."
  9. I think, given the nature of wrist injuries, he doesn't come back to protect himself and to shaft the team that I'm sure he feels just "disrespected" him. Time will tell.
  10. Very few teams. There's a risk to him playing though. Wrist injuries are tricky, he could come back an struggle for a bit, which decreases the likelihood from where it stands now. I'm sure he's aware of this, and his decision will be determined by how good he thinks he can be, not by how much he thinks he can help the Yankees.
  11. I guess you've been watching a completely different Gary Sheffield and how he deals with a situation where he's unhappy with his FO. The Gary Sheffield I've watched for a decade or so now would gladly take less money to play elsewhere when he's not getting what he feels is his due. Do you think this guy will do anything to risk playing next year to help the Yankees out if they don't extend him? EDIT: Hell, if weren't for the steroids thing, I would advocate the Sox picking him up in FA. I'll bet he'd like nothing more than sticking it to the Yankees. And, here's the kicker, he's the type of guy that would. He plays better pissed.
  12. I don't think nailing the Abreu thing is all that noteworthy. One team has a high-priced all-star COF that they've been trying to get rid of for a while, the other has the deepest pockets and two all-star COF on the DL. It was only a matter of time, Gillick's initial demands had to come down, and you, I, Olney, everyone knew it. I agree. The timing of this reeks of placating Sheff through the media. I don't see it working. His tune will only get worse until he's extended. What the lackey writes in his blog won't affect Sheff.
  13. I seem to remember Olney thinking they would pick his option up earlier. He's really shaking those pom-poms.
  14. I don't know. They'd only have to pay about $4M of Soriano's salary -- which is large for them -- and they have been known to spend a little when they think they can make a run. They could potentially win the WC, and once you get in the playoffs, anything can happen. Plus, they are so prospect deep right now, they could probably fleece Bowden without affecting their prospect depth. And, come next year, 2 extra early round picks to help them continue their rebuild. I wouldn't be shocked if it happened.
  15. Aloha
  16. This is just the type of thing to send him over the top after they didn't pick up his option. It wouldn't surprise me if he never swings a bat again in pinstripes -- he certainly won't up his rehab schedule for them. I'd rather face Abreu than Sheffield in Sept.
  17. Yeah, I've noticed that about Sterling. He doesn't drop it....even if the final score is a big win either way.
  18. I'm always looking for a well called game when I need to catch it on the radio. I don't like Joe and Jerry all that much either. Castiglione sounds like he swallowed a bug whenever the opposition does something good. Trupiano is a little Sterling-esque with his "swing and drive, deep to right, back, WAY BACK, WAY BACK.....caught in front of the warning track". I hate that s***.
  19. Do you think this team is playing like a first place ball club right now? I don't. Since the break they look like the 5th or 6th best team in the AL. Detroit, NYY, Minnesota, and Anaheim have all been playing better ball. And, don't look now, but the Chicago bats have woken up again. I don't see this team making the playoffs with the current roster.
  20. I know what ZR is. I also know that it is, like errors, a subjective measure since it takes someones determination to assign the zone. Range Factor is completely objective. It looks at the number of plays made in comparison to the number of innings played. Bill James created it, and his argument for it is that in a large enough sample the distribution of balls hit to each position will be about the same. Whatever, though. Average, below average, he doesn't get to enough balls from what I've seen. He's a good player, but he's totally replaceable, and if he goes to bring back pitching, then I'm for it. This team isn't making the playoffs without another decent starter. Wake or Wells could be the answer, but there are no guarantees.
  21. Brian Corey I call ********.
  22. Sterling's call of the game is more about him spewing his schtick than actually calling the game. It's pathetic. He's become a caricature of a radio announcer. He reminds me of the announcer of the big game in the movie Little Giants.
  23. And, the WMP in RF era begins.
  24. There, fixed for ya. Corrections are in bold.
  25. Yeah. Good thing the outcome can be determined from the first 1/2 year.
