So, just to be clear here. You'd rather Papi take a pitch and let the count get to 3-1 instead of smoking the ball into play? I'll tell you what, if Ortiz hit every ball as hard as he hit that one, he'd hit over .500, hell probably over .700. That type of contact from your power guy is exactly why you give him the green light 3-0. If it's in his wheelhouse, he gets to hammer it. You are just upset because it was hit at somebody.

Plan, Contigency. The time to sign Bonds, get him up to speed, and on the roster before Sept 1 (thus making him eligible for the playoff roster - assuming no 60-day DL stint for Ortiz) is now. There's just enough time to get him ready. If they don't, and one week from now Ortiz is done for the season, well, so is the season, pretty much. Bonds would be one hell of a contigency plan. If Ortiz doesn't get hurt, he can play LF, move Bay to RF, have Drew play CF. Not the ideal defensive OF, but it'll create a few runs.

I wouldn't say Kottaras is really struggling. He's got the IsoP and IsoD you want to see, but the net OPS is depressed by his awful .235 BA. The question is, how much of that is him? His BABIP is only .260. I don't know what his baseline is throughout his minor league career, but in June, when it was .300, MLB average, his OPS was .949. I live down south, and I don't have time for ST, so I don't get to see these guys until they are on TV. Anyone been to McCoy lately? Is he making good contact and getting unlucky, or is he an all-or-nothing hitter? EDIT: His MiLB BABIP is .315. Adjusted for his average, he becomes a .272/.381/.496 hitter this year. The MLE of that is .237/.322/.421. That's a .743 compared to Tek's .668 right now. That MLE is for a 25 y/o who has yet to hit his prime, so improvement would be a reasonable expectation.
