  1. Horrible game. Let's get back on it tomorrow! I'm not totally surprised, Lilly has this team's number... just like Kazmir and Paul Byrd seem to.
  2. of course it doesn't mean that he WILL be great now. That would be stupid. I think if he can pitch even close to his potential (i.e., when he leaves the game to be able to say "yeah, I made all my pitches tonight") that he'll be considerably better than Sturtz is. He may get rattled, in which case he's about the same as Sturtz. For both of them, if they start giving up hits then it could get ugly quick. I assume that if the teams are still close in the standings come friday, that the 4th and 5th pitchers would be available for a season saving appearance from the bullpen as well. That means... Arroyo and Clement for the Sox, and Wright/Small for the Yankees, right?
  3. Yeah, I just saw that on his splits. Still, not a lot of exposure.
  4. I don't think you can comment on Hansen like that. He's pitched for the Sox TWICE. I don't think you can say he's iffy and I can't say he's great. However, given his stuff he WILL be great in the future and COULD be great this year. You're right, he's supposed to have a great slider but hasn't really thrown it well yet. It doesn't make me wonder though, since he's thrown 1.6 innings. Papelbon has been used in big spots recently and has performed more than admirably. He's developed a splitter that is hard to hit (thanks to Schilling). The best part is that I don't think that Yankees have seen either pitcher, which is the first NEW thing to happen to this rivalry for awhile (add too: Aaron Small/Wang and Cano, along with Hanley Ramirez, who won't see any time in the series... I hope) Papelbon's September numbers: 2-0, 9.2 IP, 8 G, 7H, 2 R, 1.86 ERA, .206 BAA.
  5. A valid point. I think that Gordon is about as reliable as Timlin, and that Mariano is on his own level. However, I think any team in their right mind would IMMEDIATELY take Papelbon and Hansen over Sturtz. From my perspective Sturtz is an accident waiting to happen against the patient and hard-hitting sox lineup.
  6. I just read that on YES boards... GREAT! Gooooooooooo O's!
  7. It is postponed. Doubleheader tomorrow. Now I just hope the Yankees play so I can watch their game.
  8. Yeah, Hansen looked fine today. A weak ass infield hit and a shot by a pretty good major league hitter on a decent pitch. I say use him again ASAP to get his head back on straight. If we could have Hansen, Papelbon and Timlin for 7,8,9 we can rest the starters a little bit--or let them throw their hearts out for 6-7.
  9. Tejada's lacadazical play earlier put the sox back into the game.
  10. Oh I know. I'm a big timlin guy and am not worried about him. He's a gamer.
  11. Someone better be ready to restrain Ortiz's ass if he goes after this umpire.
  12. That's funny! He totally does that. And sometimes you hear pathetic, sad sounds, or just someone saying "no! no! oh my..." in a quiet depressed way.
  13. Timlin is warming up. A very Tito thing to do... go right back to the guy who let you down last time. Great for building team coherence and confidence, but I hope Timliin isn't feeling tired. On this radar gun he better be hitting 97-98.
  14. I say Papelbon setting up, Hansen setting up Papelbon, and Timlin (now in a much more limited role) closes when necessary. With a decent lead I say close with Hansen and keep Timlin ready if needed.
  15. He's been very good this year. Its funny because the other teams announcers are always really impressed with Papelbon. He's got overpowering stuff.
  16. Yeah, I think that's one of the reasons I'm rooting for Cleveland too. That guy pissed me off so much and now I root against the white sox every time they're on here because of him. But is that the right thing to want? Given that we don't know what the sox will do, it seems most logical to just root against both teams, unless they're playing each other. When they play each other root for whoever is leading the central at the time. Really, the sox just must win their games, one game at a time, yada yada.
  17. Yanks are about to win, 5-0, 1 out in the 9th. We should expect them to win at this point. We're hoping that they lose once and we really don't until we play them again. You all rooting for Chi-sox or Cleveland in the central?
  18. If the sox were going to turn their season around (at least this last part of it) there aren't two guys I would expect to be right in the mix of it more than Trot and Arroyo. It seems that Manny and Ortiz always produce. The players that are most important to the sox success are Damon, Tek, and Nixon (recently, too, I should add Graffinino but he's hurt).
  19. Do we close with Timlin? Papelbon? Hansen? Assuming we get that far
  20. Seriously, its some good reachin back. It also might be Baltimore's radar gun, it had Cabrera clocked at 101 earlier and Arroyo has hit 95 at least 3 times this inning. Maybe Raffy isn't the only thing that's juiced in Baltimore.
  21. Okay, Bronson just threw a 94 mph heater to end the inning. 94? What the hell? Where did that come from?
  22. If we don't use Hansen we will lose. I'm sorry, but regardless of mentality, immaturity, etc., what's the worst that's going to happen? He gives up a few hits and we lose. What's likely to happen? Well, Hansen will probably throw a number of nasty 98 mph pitches and, whether he gives up runs or not, he will make it hard to hit.
  23. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are rolling over and hoping that Jeter can scratch their belly just the way they like it to be scratched.
