  1. It worked out, but I really think Joe got a bit lucky there. Nova was struggling, and some hittable pitches were missed by some very good hitters. With that being said, I thought he would get hit, and I was definitely wrong. Really hope that's it, despite what turned out to be a quick sixth inning.
  2. Bit lucky there that Young didn't go with the pitch, which was hittable and could have been shot into right field, but I guess it was a decent breaking ball.
  3. Nova really should be out of this game.
  4. ORS covered this entirely, but I'll just add my two cents. Pedro's stretch from 1997-2000 (and as ORS mentioned, possibly 1997-2003) was the greatest four year stretch ever. 219 ERA+ 5.68 SO/BB 0.925 WHIP If you want advanced stats his FIP in those four years was 2.39, 3.40, 1.39, and 2.17. Crazy good.
  5. Should be Logan or Robertson right here. EDIT: Worked out. Two nice curves to keep the lead. But Nova has stayed true to form, and struggled after the first time through the order.
  6. Defense letting the Yankees down a bit. Thome's double was catchable, and Swisher had a chance there if he came up with it cleanly.
  7. Only reason Young is in position to make that play is that he can play so shallow for Gardner. But a very nice play regardless.
  8. Haha new series ... playing the Twins now. Come on now VA, keep up.
  9. Also, I'd have to look at the charts, but I feel like Nova shows too much of his stuff too early. Might explain his struggles the second and third times through the order.
  10. Watching Hughes yesterday, and now Nova, makes you realize how important strikeout pitchers are.
  11. Just missed another one.
  12. Nice, at least that clears Jeter's spot for next inning.
  13. Posada off to a good start, while Baker looks absolutely awful.
  14. Captain Clutch! And A-Rod is locked in.
  15. We'll see what kind of year Jackson has when he doesn't benefit from a .396 BABIP. The defense will be there, but I don't think Jackson will ever be much of a hitter. The strikeouts don't stop coming, and the luck he had last year will run out.
  16. 2009: 2.49 ERA, 3.09 FIP, 6.8 WAR 2010: 2.27 ERA, 3.04 FIP, 6.2 WAR Did I mention he was 24?
  17. Felix has all-time great potential, he's 24 (!!!!!) years old, and is signed to an affordable (by his standards) contract over the next four years. Trades for players like that never happen.
  18. If the Yankees have an opportunity to acquire Felix for Montero and Banuelos, and they pass, it would easily be the worst decision of the Cashman era.
  19. The Stadium/TV guns are always unreliable.
  20. And just to further dispel the idea that Hughes' velocity was OK today... http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2011/04/03/yankees-postgameconcern-for-hughes/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+LohudYankees+%28The+LoHud+Yankees+Blog%29&utm_content=Twitter
  21. Phil Hughes vs the Red Sox is a horrifying thought for me.
  22. You're overstating Hughes' velocity today. It was similar to what it was in ST. http://twitter.com/#!/therealarieber/status/54631914295922688 And again, the primary concern, which has hindered Hughes throughout his entire MLB career as a starting pitcher, is the ability to put hitters away. For the most part, this stems from his subpar curve ball, especially when it comes to the sharpness of its break.
  23. Today's loss is obviously no big deal, but I can't help but wonder if Hughes' velocity issues will linger. He's someone who just cannot afford to lose velocity. His fastball location is just decent, and his secondary stuff is poor. Without throwing the ball 93 MPH, Hughes could be in a whole lot of trouble this year.
