    Yes, I think there are two spots open, and one of them is going to go to Marte. Considering they don't need a fourth starter in the first round, they won't need Joba to start a game. Therefore, the last spot, in my opinion, comes down to Joba or Gaudin. They might choose to take Gaudin, and then tell Joba to stay ready because he would start a game in the ALCS if the Yankees advance.

    I know. And that was probably the wrong move. But it didn't cost them the game. Santana was at 87 pitches when he was removed, pitching on short rest. He might have told Gardenhire he had nothing left, or Gardenhire thought he had nothing left. Regardless, Grant Balfour came in and shut the Yankees down in the sixth and seventh innings. The game was tied in the 8th inning, with Juan Rincon in. Even if he had not taken Santana out after five, and had left him in through either the sixth or seventh inning, Rincon was still going to pitch the eighth. There is no way at 87 pitches through five innings, on three days rest, that Santana was going to pitch the eighth inning, no matter who the manager was.

    I don't think the Beckett thing is a really good comparison. First off, just to clarify, it was not in the World Series. It was game seven of the NLCS. But more importantly, it was only a one run in the 5th inning. That's a little bit different then a seven run game in the 7th inning.

    Again though, I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who really only knows how Francona manages in the playoffs, and not in the regular season.

    The same Ron Gardenhire who blames God Bless America for his team a playoff game. As for the Pedro thing, that was probably a mistake, but it doesn't constitute him being a bad manager. The thing is, I get on Joe Girardi all the time, but if he manages with a heightened sense of urgency in the playoffs, then I'll be OK with him. I think Francona has done a pretty good job in the playoffs. Lets give him some credit for things he's done also such as his unorthodox use of Keith Foulke in the 2004 ALCS and his decision to start Derek Lowe over Bronson Arroyo in Game 7.

    I think it's more important to carry two lefties then both Chamberlain and Gaudin. Also, keep in mind that Jerry Hairston's wrist injury might be serious.

    Agreed. I created a thread about the Yankees' postseason roster. The way I see it, there are only two open pitching spots, and Kennedy is not going to fill one of them.

    Now that they're officially in, I figured this thread was appropriate. It's worth noting that Cashman said they would carry ten pitchers. So we'll go with the assumption that the Yankees' will carry fifteen position players and ten pitchers. Definite Position Players: Catchers: Posada and Molina Infielders: Teixeira, Cano, Jeter, and Rodriguez Outfielders: Swisher, Gardner, Cabrera, Damon, and Hinske Designated Hitter: Matsui That leaves three spots open. The options are Hairston (if healthy), Pena, Cervelli, Guzman, Duncan, and Miranda. I think they take Hairston, Pena, and Guzman. Definite Pitchers: Starting Pitchers: Sabathia, Burnett, and Pettitte Relief Pitchers: Rivera, Hughes, Robertson, Aceves, and Coke That leaves two spots open. The options are Chamberlain, Marte, Gaudin, and Bruney. I think they take Chamberlain and Marte.
