  1. Lackey really seemed to tire that inning, but he got away with his mistakes. I'm guessing that's it for him.
  2. One lost thought about the National Championship Game. On Butler's second to last possession, with thirteen seconds left, I don't understand with Brad Stevens didn't go back to the pick and roll. With Zoubek under the basket, Butler was having a great deal of trouble scoring in the paint. They were very successful drawing Zoubek out on the pick and roll, because after hedging, he was very slow to recover. Granted, at that stage of the game Duke almost certainly would have switched instead of hedging on screens, but that would have created a situation where Zoubek was forced to guard someone on the perimeter. Even if Zoubek stayed home a bit, it would have created a good look at a jump shot, which would have been much better than what Butler ended up getting.
  3. I'm not saying I think Ortiz is done, but you have to see the difference. For obvious reasons, there is going to be more concern about Ortiz than there was for Beckett and Lester last year.
  4. When you're comparing cross generation, in most cases, it's really difficult to factor defense into the comparison. In terms of guys who have played the position their entire career, Honus Wagner, pretty clearly, is the greatest shortstop of all time. After that, I would say it's Derek Jeter, Arky Vaughn, Joe Cronin, and Ernie Banks in no particular order. EDIT: As for your edit, that's a bit misleading, as he was close to average in 2008 and quite good in 2009.
  5. In my opinion, scorekeepers tend to award a batter a hit when it really should have been an error much more often than the other way around. I agree, if player doesn't have a lot of errors, that doesn't necessarily make him a good defender. However, if a player has a lot of errors, that's pretty telling in my opinion.
  6. If he continues to struggle, Francona also might want to consider swapping him and Drew.
  7. Money helped make this happen, among other things, but those are three guys who are you so committed to this franchise. It's great to see.
  8. This was my initial reaction as well, and the only reason I'm responding to this now is because I looked it up at the time. http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfx/location.php?pitchSel=121250&game=gid_2010_04_06_nyamlb_bosmlb_1/&batterX=453056&innings=yyyyyyyyy&s_type=3&sp_type=1&h_size=700&v_size=500 The home plate umpire was bad tonight, but not in this case.
  9. No one up in the bullpen. Joe just never anticipates pitchers struggling, he just waits for it to happen.
  10. ORS, just to quickly go back to what we were discussing the other night, I just think the umpires miss a decent percentage of the very close calls. It was close at first with Teixeira, and they called him safe. No theatrics at all. Sure, it's possible that you're right, but I think there is just a higher probability that they miss a decent amount of close calls because it's difficult to tell with the naked eye.
  11. This is true, but one of them, quite clearly, has looked much worse.
  12. I understand. I see Girardi's reasoning, especially in this situation, with Thames' power and the Green Monster. I would just prefer the improved defense over the marginally better offense, and, in my opinion, it's the reason they're down 1-0.
  13. The number one thing I did not miss about baseball during the winter is watching AJ Burnett pitch.
  14. Defense is probably it. When it comes to facing lefties, I would say that him and Thames are pretty comparable, both doing things that the other can't do.
  15. Exactly why Gardner should be out there.
  16. I understand playing Thames instead of Gardner against a RHP, especially at Fenway, but Gardner played well on Sunday. I was hoping he would be more of an everyday player, especially because of what it does to the Yankees' outfield defense. At least right now, it looks like the Yankees plan on going forward with a platoon. EDIT: Girardi said that he will probably play regularly against lefties, but it won't always be for Gardner.
  17. I always look forward to One Shining Moment, but having Jennifer Hudson sing it was a really bad decision in my opinion. It lacked the elegance that I typically associate with the tribute to the tournament.
  18. Friend of mine made an interesting point. CBS never gave us a good look at it, and after watching it a half dozen times, I can't say for certain that the ball left his finger tips before the clock hit zero.
  19. Great game. Would have probably been the greatest shot in the history of college basketball. Duke is a very deserving champion.
  20. Such a well designed play, and Singler couldn't convert.
