  4. Ortiz named AL Outstanding Player Red Sox designated hitter earns Players Choice Award BOSTON-- Only time will tell if Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz gets the support of baseball writers when the American League Most Valuable Player is announced on Nov. 14. However, it is clear that Ortiz won over the respect of his peers with another monster year in 2005, as he was selected the AL's Outstanding Player in the Players Choice Awards on Thursday. The left-handed masher seems to raise his game to a higher level each year. In 2005, he was simply marvelous, establishing career highs in runs (119), hits (180), homers (47), RBIs (148), total bases (363), walks (102) and OPS (1.001). The Players Choice Awards are the culmination of a unique process that annually allows players on all 30 teams to cast their votes. This is just the latest honor for Ortiz, who was unveiled as the AL's Hank Aaron Award (best overall hitter) prior to Game 4 of the World Series. The rise of Ortiz never gets old to Red Sox fans. He was released by the Twins following the 2002 season, then picked up by the Red Sox for a modest one-year contract (just more than $1 million). In 2003, his first season with the Sox, Ortiz finished fifth in the AL MVP voting, bashing 31 homers and driving in 101 runs. One-year wonder? Hardly. All Ortiz did in '04 was hit .301, smash 41 homers and drive in 139 runs. But it was during the 2004 postseason that Ortiz truly became a household name. In helping the Red Sox to their first World Series title in 86 years, Ortiz produced a walk-off homer in the 12th inning of Game 4 of the American League Championship Series, then won Game 5 with an RBI single in the 14th inning, helping the surging Red Sox become the first team to rally back from a 3-0 deficit in a postseason series. Again, Ortiz raised his game to another level in 2005, this time showing marked improvement in his plate discipline, while showing no apparent weakness at the plate. Ortiz had a flair for the dramatic in 2005, winning games with walk-off homers on June 2 (against Orioles closer B.J. Ryan) and Sept. 6 (off Angels setup man Scot Shields). Following that latter blast, Red Sox principal owner John W. Henry and president/CEO Larry Lucchino entered the clubhouse and presented Ortiz with a plaque that said, "The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox, David Ortiz, #34." Who could argue? "It's incredible how he does things the way he does them," veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield said in September. "He's Mr. Clutch." "David's a special player," Sox catcher Jason Varitek said. "He has a great swing. He has a great approach. He has good mechanics. He's powerful. He thrives in that situation." How does Ortiz always manage to rise to the challenge when the game is on the line? "I always think about, 'OK, I got to get the job done.' I believe in myself," Ortiz said following his game-winner off Ryan. "I believe I can do it. That's all I put in my mind."
  5. this isn't suppose to be surprising
  6. huzzah? what kinda freak are you?
  7. I really can't see theo getting back into baseball for at least a year. the dodgers are in even worse shape than we are
  8. we know your just saying that because 1/4 of your team prly takes them.
  9. Good luck with that free agency thing, Matt. http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ny-splawton1103,0,664889.story?coll=ny-sports-headlines "Matt Lawton has tested positive for steroids, Newsday has confirmed. Major League Baseball is expected to make an announcement later today. The positive test for Lawton, who was traded to the Yankees on Aug. 28, was first reported by Deadspin.com. Lawton filed for free agency earlier this week. In 21 games with the Yankees, Lawton struggled, going only 6-for-48 (.125). After he did not make the postseason roster, he asked to leave the team and head home instead of sticking around in the event he was needed as an injury replacement. "
  10. "Alex Rodriguez - 3B - Yankees Although they're powerless to stop him, the Yankees have warned Alex Rodriguez about the dangers of frequenting illegal city poker clubs, the New York Daily News reports. It was reported a month ago that Rodriguez had frequented a Chelsea club with professional poker player Phil Hellmuth. Sources told the paper that commissioner Bud Selig was "keeping an eye" on A-Rod and would step in "if necessary." If Rodriguez wants to associate with gamblers on a regular basis, he'll have to do better than 2-for-17 in his next postseason series. Can't afford to make anyone suspicious Source: New York Daily News (via rotoworld)
  11. that was a great mavs and suns game, also the bucks/76ers game was entertaining as well. redd hit the game tying 3 with 1.6 left in regulation and the bucks eventually won it even though iverson and webber had 30+ points each.
  12. not sure if this has been posted yet but it gives a little insight into how one Red Sox player feels about Theo leaving.
  13. He is the first Red Sox since Tony Pena to win a gold glove since 1992, wow.
  14. Oh Captain, My Captain!
  15. Screwed? I wouldn't go that far
  16. Personally, I don't think It will be that hard to find another GM. There are 5 GM jobs that everyone in Baseball aims for the Yanks, Red Sox, Dodgers, Cards and Cubs. Theo is walking away from one of those jobs and 1.5 mil a year to do that job. I think he should count his blessings that he even got the job at 28 w/ basically no baseball back round. I wish him luck on his next job. We will miss him but not as much as everyone thinks.
  17. too bad you don't have any class back on topic theo is truly a class act as evidenced by this statement...." I will continue to work with the organization for several days to assist in an orderly transition and to prepare further for the upcoming GM meetings and other offseason activities.
  18. same here theo is a pimp!
  19. I am still in denial Maybe they are giving us a trick instead of a treat on Halloween?
  20. I consider this to be very bad news, and I arbitrarily blame Lucchino. I had dillusions of Theo staying as the Red Sox manager till he was an old man... it was probably silly... but now I'm going to wish him the best in whatever he does. Run for House of Representatives Theo!
  21. good move
  22. as a bills fan I'm gonna look at both ends of the spectrum here.... the bills d is looking super-overated at this point. the run d sucks and milloy is looking very old out there. look for dillon to go nuts even if he's not 100%. the whole bruschi return thing should be enough motivation for the pats even he if plays like crap....least it'll really get the fans into the game early. look for them to start holcomb again...i can't see them throwing jp into the fire here after they benched him for 2 home games. now the positive side of me.. i don't think this will be as big of a blowout as it usually is. The pats d is even worse than the bills this year. correct me if i'm wrong, but they've allowed 30+ points in the last 3 games, and 20+ points in EVERY game this season. if we give the ball to willis all night, after bruschi dies from exhaustion (only 1 week of practice all season,) i think we have a shot at scoring. thats only if MM decides to run the ball. also, "godly" harrison is out, and if holcomb learns how to throw a ball deep, well, anything further than 10 yards, theres another way to win. and, our defense needs to show up. if all 3 of those happen, plus we get some good returns from mcGee (fresh off his contract) + we contain dillon, i really think we stand a chance of winning this game. now, in reality, they'll likely only meet 1 of the 5 criteria
