The Twins have one of the hardest schedules left out of all the MLB teams, and most of their games are on the road where they have struggled this season. I don't see them as legit, and thank God because in a postseason series we won't have to deal with Santana-Liriano as the best 1-2 punch in baseball. I wouldn't be surprised if the Red Sox or Yanks took the wild card, as now even the White Sox are starting to fade with a 2-10 record since the All Star Break. They too have one of the toughest remaining schedules.
However, I agree with you in that we need another starting pitcher. What we have is not good enough to go deep in a series no matter how you spin it. Winning the East would be nice, but like you said, we're not built in such a way to go deep. Then, if we take the wild card, we'd have a harder time going deep into the postseason because of the difficulty of our first round matchup. Schilling-Beckett is in no way the 1-2 punch of '04 with Schill-Pedro, though I would love to see what Beckett can do in the second half of the season since he is historically very good down the stretch. Not to mention what he did in '03. I just hope he can get through a playoff series matchup of 2 AL teams instead of 2 NL teams. I know he did well against the Yanks, but that was 2 games against an AL opponent the whole postseason. We have the team to win it all, we are just a veteran starting pitcher short. If trading someone like Hansen means bringing in a veteran to solidify the rotation to make us a solid contender, then so be it. I'm against waiting around to see if our future studs can bring us a title. We live in Boston, we want to win. Of course I'm against trading kids like Lester and Papelbon and Pedroia, but anyone else I don't see as untouchable, even Delcarmen. I wouldn't trade both Delcarmen and Hansen though.
Now, back to Wily Mo. If they traded Arroyo only to trade Wily Mo somewhere, I will be very disappointed. At the time I was happy with the trade because no one could have thought that we'd be having these pitching problems with the surplus of pitching that we were blessed with at the beginning of the season. We had all the pitching in the world, but as we've learned (unfortunately, the hard way), you can never have too much of it. Arroyo led the league in "quality" starts and everytime he took the mound I was confident that he would give us a chance to win the game. So, we trade Arroyo for what? Another piece of trade bait? That's stupid. If Wily Mo stays here and gets to play, then I'll judge the Arroyo/WMP trade in 2 or 3 years. But if he's traded away I will view it as a stupid move. Unless of course, the likes of Cabrera or Willis come in return.
