  1. Indeed. Where is the love? Nomar's not entirely at fault in the whole Red Sox/Nomar/A-Rod scandal, the Red Sox DID treat him like crap in the process. They had serious balls offering him a LOWER contract after he turned down 5 years, $60 million (or whatever the offer was). Nomar was a great player in Boston, and a team icon for 6 years. He didn't deserve to be dragged through the mud, but he should have accepted the first fair contract. I believe Nomar was fed up with the Boston media (as a lot of players are), and was ready to leave town anyway. It's a shame things had to end the way they did. There's no doubt Nomar signed this contract to try to increase his value, and the Cubs are hoping to be able to benefit by getting an All-Star caliber shortstop for less money, considering Renteria should get $8-$10 mil, and Cabrera's looking for $8 mil too I believe. If Nomar can return to form, the Cubs got a bargain. If he can't, they only risked 1 year on him. Overall, I say this is what's best for both sides at this point.
  2. It's sad to see Williamson go. I really liked him and he would have made the Boston bullpen great had he stayed healthy last year. Mendoza contributed nothing to the Red Sox for 2 years, so it's not surprising to see him not returning. Adams, Leskanic are good pitchers who didn't get a lot of action in Boston. Overall, the Red Sox offered arbritration to every major player: Varitek, Martinez, Lowe, Cabrera, Reese and some not so major Astacio, McCarty I'd say they pretty much made all the right decisions. Now it's just a matter of seeing where people go.
  3. Nomar Garciaparra has signed a 1 year, $8 million contract with the Cubs. Discuss
  4. According to MLB.com and ESPN.com, the New York Yankees have agreed to terms with: Tony Womack: 2 years, $4 mil And are close on: Jaret Wright: 3 years, $21 mil Discuss
  5. One guy the Sox were definately looking at is off the market. Radke's back in Minnesota. Discuss
  6. link Don't trust everything you read. I read this too, but I disregarded it. The Yankees interest seems to be mostly because the Red Sox expressed interest, and look where that got them with Contreras. HA! Had to gloat a little about THAT one... suckers.
  7. I have to admit this post made me laugh. In all honesty, I don't feel sorry for Jason Giambi at all. As my Dad would say: "He made his bed, now he's got to sleep in it." Or something like that. You get the point.
  8. I voted Orioles. Why, you say? Because I believe the Yankees will persue other priorities. Johnson, Milton, Lieber. I doubt they'll be able to unload Brown, and with Mussina already in the fold, that's a 5-man rotation already. Because I also believe the Red Sox will perue other priorities. Pedro Martinez being #1, with the potential for a Hudson/Zito type player. And finally, because Baltimore will be stupid enough to believe signing Pavano makes them a contender, and overpay him.
  9. Bosox Rule is right. The Red Sox have nothing to lose with this move. I just wouldn't EXPECT anything from him.
  10. Gotta love a speedster, but I wouldn't get too excited about this kid. Kaz Matsui (probably the best comparison) was a STAR in Japan but just OK here in his first year. (.272, 7 HR, 14 SB). Granted, Hideki Matsui was significantly better in his second year, so I'd expect Kazuo to improve. I say the Sox should go after him, but he may be hitting his stride just when Hanley is ready, if the last 2 guys are a good example. Of course, Ichiro suffered no setbacks upon coming over, winning ROY and MVP in his first season.... I'd love it if the Sox signed a speedster/leadoff type guy for shortstop. This guy seems like he fits that mold.
  11. That's 2 awesome trade for the Yankees, crappy for the Red Sox. They trade Lofton for Rodriguez (HUGE advantage Yankees) And Heredia for Stanton (Advantage Yankees) These trades probably won't get a lot of press, but WILL help the Yankees win games.
  12. The homers count. That's in the past. Giambi's got to worry now about his future, because the Yankees WILL try to void his contract. This is an awful development for Red Sox fans and all non-Yankee fans. This gives the Yankees grounds to void Giambi's contract, save millions of dollars, and invest that money on someone else. Remember what happened the last time the Yankees voided a contract and needed a replacement player? Scary.
  13. I have to agree with all y'all on Valentin. I read this same statement on boston.com and I really didn't like it. Valentin is not the right kind of player Boston should be looking at. He's like Bellhorn WITHOUT the walks. He hit 30 HR but he STILL only slugged .473 because of his really low batting average. And he's 35 so it's not like he's going to get a lot better. I'm with Crespo-- I'd take Pokey Reese's sparkling D over Valentin's mediocre offense anyday. Personally, I like the idea of signing Larkin and Reese and playing them both. Barry's not an allstar anymore, but he's solid and would be a good short-term guy since the Sox have Hanley Ramirez coming up.
  14. I'm out. capable intellect?
  15. Bellhorn is a property of the Boston Red Sox. He is not a Free Agent
  16. I can't believe this is true until it actually happens.
  17. The Cards have the most to offer, that's for sure. The package I read about with Calero, Haren, and possibly Ankiel would be a pretty good return on Johnson. Especially if Ankiel bounces back like people think he will. Plus Calero and Haren are able to contribute immediately.
  18. Not sure if the Sox need Kent at this point. They have 2 1B's already (Millar and Mientkiewicz) They have Bellhorn to play 2B every day They already have 2 DHs (Manny and Ortiz) Kent's a great hitter, but where does he fit in with the Red Sox needs? There would have to be a lot of roster shuffling for the Sox to go seriously after Kent.
  19. What time Thursday?
  20. That's pretty much all speculation at this point. Randy Johnson never actually SAID he didn't want to come to Boston, but it was widely speculated that he wouldn't come. I think the Red Sox are not confident that Pedro will resign, hence going after Johnson. That would be one heck of a rotation with Randy coming to Boston... but it would also be hard to see Arroyo and Lester go. On one hand, I don't want to see Johnson go to New York or Anaheim and come back to haunt the Red Sox. On the other, the Sox need to think about both now and the future, because they'll never be able to spend like the Yankees. Trading Arroyo and Lester would most likely hurt them down the road. I'm torn on this rumor. I'd be happy if a deal like this went down, but since Johnson makes $16 mil, it probably means no OC and no Tek
  21. If I were the Sox, I'd guarantee him that 3rd year, but NO WAY I'm going with a 4th year. With Martinez' health history, and the fact that he'd be 37 and making $13 million.... Not smart. Look at Kevin Brown. He's virtually untradable at $15 million and a huge waste of money. I say match the 3-year offer, and if he declines, go after Brad Radke, and/or Pavano.
  22. The Mets have reportedly offered Pedro Martinez 3 years, $37.5 million This is better than the Red Sox offer of 2 years with an optional third year, but not by much. The only difference I see is that the 3rd year is guaranteed. I think the money is the same. I think the Red Sox should match this offer and see how Pedro reacts.
  23. No. Minaya took over after the MLB took over ownership of the Expos, which was after the Pedro Martinez trade (I think)
