  1. 4 up 4 down for the Mexecutioner. And Bard with the win!! Take that, haters!
  2. That someone is batting right now.
  3. That's it! We need a reanimation/zombification process for Gonzo! Does anyone on the training staff have any qualifications in the Dark Arts?
  4. Halfway to a correct prediction!
  5. Not even close! Well, pretty close...
  6. The 3 guys coming up for the Orioles have a BA of .406... when you add them together!
  7. Looks like a soft bottom 3 in the lineup, but it seems like we often score a lot of runs in that situation, somehow.
  8. This offense can score some runs. Look at that 2-7 (I'm including Salty since he's hot right now). Heck, Aviles is no slouch right now, either. Now... imagine replacing Nava and Byrd with Crawdad and Ellsbury. I need a cold shower.
  9. Amen. Nava-Sweeney-Gonzo worked in Philly. It's not the long-term solution, of course, but it will work as a stopgap. Of course, you have to slot in Byrd for Sweeney during whatever time Sweeney misses with his whiplash/concussion. Good gracious, could you imagine what carnage would ensue if one of us went back in time to late March and said that by the end of May we might have an outfield of Nava-Byrd-Gonzo? This whole forum would have gone so crazy-go-nuts that the server would have melted. No kiddin'. But right now, that's about the best we can do. Playing OF for the 2012 Red Sox is like smashing a mirror over a black cat's head while walking under a ladder.
  10. I'm down with that. Especially with the possibility of Ross missing an extended chunk of time. Gonzo seems to have the basic skillset down. He doesn't have an OF's wheels, but hey, you can't have everything. One thing I don't know about is his arm. Maybe he has a cannon and we never see it because he plays 1B. Anyone have any ideas?
  11. I am nothing like a baseball expert, but I have to agree with the Dojj here. As far as I recall, Bard has not been hit hard all year. Even when he has given up runs, it has often been flares and infield hits (which he can hardly help) and walks (which he can). I've said more than once this year that if he can stop putting guys on base he'll be unstoppable. Admittedly, I haven't actually seen his starts (not exactly being in NESN's home territory ), and also I wouldn't know bad mechanics if they bit me on the rear. I'm just looking at the numbers, and the numbers seem to be saying that if he can limit the walks he will be all right.
  12. Awesome! Nice research. I guess it stands to reason that Carl Yaszsztrteszstretremski was involved in some high-letter-score HRs.
  13. Random thought: Saltalamacchia (14 letters) hit a homer, driving in Middlebrooks (12 letters) and Gonzalez (8 letters). That's 34 letters scoring on one homer. I wonder if that's the record, or close to it. I bet it is the record for a three-run homer. Obviously, a granny would get you a extra name into the equation but you'd still have to average almost 9 letters per name on a granny to beat 34. I know Garciaparra (11 letters) hit a few grannies, but did he have any teammates well-endowed with last name length?
  14. You better walk Nick Punto!
  15. The big problem is that Shields is mowing them down quite efficiently and could be out there all day.
  16. Oh, by the way, that gives us a positive run differential for the season. And it's all thanks to the 1997 Tampa Bay Devil Rays bullpen.
  17. Eh, it happens. A few seasons ago the Blue Jays were unbeatable for about a third of the season and respectable people were starting to wonder if they weren't maybe for real. Then they remembered, "Oh, right, we're the Blue Jays." Yes, the O's will finish last, handily.
  18. The moral of this story is that in general the Rays' starter had better pitch a complete game or something close to it, or we will relentlessly abuse the bullpen. EDIT: And the best part is that their bullpen is already depleted after these two games, so we'll get a chance to see even more really bad relievers in the late innings tomorrow and the next day.
  19. Enquiring minds really do want to know. And the pitcher's a righty, too. I mean, Darnell is, um, not that good against RHP as I recall.
  20. We had two relievers in this game mowing people down, but there seems to be some sort of psychosis among MLB managers driving them to tinker with something that is working. As soon as we get a lead, let's remove the pitcher who is doing well and put someone else in. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong (which I may well be) but it often seems like pitchers either have it or they don't. Sure, sometimes you get a really good pitcher gutting his way through a day when he didn't have his good stuff. But Padilla and Morales clearly both had it today. Padilla is stretched out for starting and Morales had thrown... well, I guess 29 pitches probably was enough, given the conventional wisdom on relief outings. Frustrating.
