That was old school. Sal Maglie and Drysdale made a living with those 'close shaves.'

I still don’t like to see that. If that was their pitching throwing that at Martinez, our board would erupt. Uncalled for.

Richards has a little mean streak in him.

Actually its more of a short circuited brain streak...like when he was throwing over to 1st base a few games ago at 100 mph. That was not just around his head. That was straight at his head.

I think he was aiming to miss.

True, but leaning in to get hit by pitch is completely bush. Something that A-roid used to do a lot.

It's part of what made Pedro great.

(Keep 'em honest.)

Pedro had the control to do that. He could put it a few inches from you and miss you. Richards...not so much and I am not convinced Richards was not throwing directly at his head. Richards can go short circuit between the ears on occasion.

Then drill him in the ribs. That leaves a mark that does not leave for a couple days at least.

Yeah, but then the bases are loaded.

Then aim to make him move his feet. That was directly at the hitters head. Sorry...that was not thrown to miss and Richards is just screwball enough to lose it enough to do that.

He is a bit of a cracked dome IMO.

Back in the days before long-term contracts, when most players were on one-year contracts, baseball was a much meaner and brutal game. Not a whole lot of fraternizing with the opposition. I still never understood throwing at the batter who happened to be batting after the guy who hit the dinger.

That was simply the way the game was played then. Safest place was in the OF. Infield, on the bases, at the plate....lots of sharks in the water that could bite at any moment. You only had the fans to worry about in the OF.

No doubt about that. As a fan I loved the game more when the players were playing for their jobs and salaries each year. As a player, I would love long-term contracts. So what was good for the players was, imho, bad for the fans.

That's the danger of throwing to miss by an inch.

If you are off by 2-3 inches, it can be deadly.

Still, when a batter leans in like that, he has to expect a pitch that may not be in the strike zone.

Face shot is a bit much lol. But fair enough.

I am constantly stunned by the number of 0-0 pitches hitters swing at from pitchers struggling with their control.

Richards should be done for the night. Pitched well tonight.

Well, I did look it up. It was Joba The Hut.

Too bad Joba never played for the (G)Nats...
