No draft pick Comp if Mookie is dealt at mid way deadline .Hes gone folks

There's got to be a better example. Nomar wasn't traded after scoring the walk-off run from first base on a single. Nomar was traded after pouting on the bench, while all his teammates stood on the top step of the dugout to watch Jeter dive face-first into the stands. Plus, OCab and Doug M weren't prospects coming here in '04, but refinements.

I can't think of any Red Sox blockbuster trades where the Sox actually swapped a star player and got back a haul of prospects. MLB.com can't either, because in this link, almost all of the deals are when Boston gave up the haul for a star in return (except getting Varitek and Lowe for Slocumb, who wasn't even good at the time).

BOSTON -- Few teams in baseball history have had as many impactful trades as the Red Sox, who helped set up their recent golden era of World Series championships with their wheeling and dealing ways. Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, Chris Sale and Josh Beckett are some of the championship aces

Does anyone recall a haul?

Some of this is a little too specific to deny any parallel. Nomar was on a fast track to the Hall of Fame and one of the best shortstops in team history before injuries derailed him, but he was a better player than Cabrera. He was worth 5.8 fWAR in 2003 a year prior to the trade. And while he was only worth 1.5 fWAR in 2004, as the injuries piled up, he was still worth more than Cabrera that year.

Whether or not Cabrera and Mientikiwicz were prospects is immaterial. It's not like the Sox have swapped Betts for prospects yet. They did swap Edgar Renteria for BA #2 Andy Marte, but then flipped Marte for Coco Crisp and others. No rule against doing that again.

As for dealing for a star for prospects, the AGon trade leaps to mind. But even if you don't like that example, just because the Sox have never done it before is no reason to not do it now. After all, when was the last time the Sox were trying to pare salary to get under the luxury tax limits? The situation itself is novel, and therefore the solution might need to be, too.

No one wants to white flag 2020, but this team will still have Devers, Bogaerts, Benntendi and Martinez near the top of the order. While Mookie does make it even better, let's not pretend this lineup is built around Cody Ross without him. With or without Betts, the Sox will score. The season largely rests on the health of Price, Sale, and Eovaldi. And if they all go down, it won't matter whether or not the Sox have Betts...

If Henry really gives the reigns to Bloom, I would assume he is going to try and maximize return for expensive or short term assets. JD and Mookie would be high on that list. JD will be more complicated as he's getting potentially above-market value and he can shift his NTC to the 3 most likely teams to deal for him. Mookie is the guy who would return the most provided the team acquiring him is fine with giving away talent and paying $30 mil for a one year rental. Mookie might be the kind of asset Bloom is willing to ship cash with the absolutely maximize his return. Heck, could you imagine the return if he dealt with TB and offered to eat half the contract?

In a day and age where many teams frown upon long term, big money deals, 1 year of a guy worth $50+M at just $28M is a lower risk bargain.

Look, I know we won't get anything super great, and I know maybe 20 teams wouldn't even make an offer, but someone out there (more than one GM) is very likely to think they are a Mookie away from being the top contender.

(Yes, you are right about the 4th round being after the 1st, if we reset.)
