But it was a 77 MPH slider by a bad pitcher with awful control. I know the tensions are high but I really don't think he did that on purpose, he's had issues all year with control.

I agree. It was a dreadfully bad call but it's the one that had to be made under the circumstances. This is the problem with "zero tolerance" in any situation.

 

The good news - if there is any - is that MLB is making the statement that these two teams WILL rein it in.

You put it better than I did. Plus I love the fact that showalter went ape, as did the orioles announcers. i might add that the evidence that it was accidental is entirely circumstantial. the facts are that the orioles have now physically hit two boston batters since machado made the hard slide into pedroia, who missed some games. the fact is that our pitcher, while not known for his great control, has made over 60 pitches without coming anywhere near hitting an orioles player.
