With nothing better to do during the long winter months waiting for baseball activities to begin, I sometimes wonder what some of our earlier heroes are doing now that they are retired from their baseball days.

Today, for some unknown reason, Tom Brady's brother-in-law comes to mind. As one of my favorite players the Greek God of Walks for ten years put up annually a BA .281, HR's 23, & RBI 94 while providing sterling defense at 1B.

So, what's Youk doing these days???????

Anyone else wanting to join in and curious as to the present day status of an earlier Sox player.

Decided to do a little research on my own, rather than wait for responses from the many knowledgeable members of the forum. But before revealing where and what Youk is now doing, allow me to share the following humorous quote.

former Red Sox manager Terry Francona, referring to his nickname, the 'Greek God of Walks'

"I've seen Youkilis in the shower, and I wouldn't call him the Greek god of anything."

And as for present day life, in August 2016, Youk, along with his brother Scott, opened Loma Brewing Company, a brewpub in Los Gatos, California.

So I guess the next time any of us are in Los Gatos, we should 'Walk' into his brewpub and say hello.

Did anyone else here see the old episode of Man Vs. Food where Youk was at the Eagle Deli in Cleveland Circle while there was a challenge going? I believe that he white shirt and tie on and sunglasses on his bald head. H just sat there noshin away.

Youk is one of my all-time favorite Sox players.

I did catch that episode but I don't recall Youk wearing a tie. He might have been, I just don't recall it...

You may be right. But I do distinctly remember that he had a dress shirt and nice slacks on.

It was pretty funny how they sucked him into it when they realized who he was.

I loved that man as a ballplayer. One of the best professional hitters in his generation, didn't have a ton of natural talent but briefly became a true elite hitter through sheer patience and discipline.

I'm with you on this , Dojji.

Not exactly the poster boy for ripped 5 tool players. We watched him make himself into a very good defensive player and an OBP guy with pop.

He was always a high OBP guy.

He was close to a .500 OBP in college.

His first year in the minors (over 270 PAs) saw an OBP over .500!

He ended up with a .442 OBP in over 1800 minor league PAs.

I did not realize that. However I was referring to his MLB only bat.

Being an MLB OBP kind of guys is harder and more valuable.

I wonder what Dice K is doing...... I ruined it didn't I?

No not at all. Because while on the topic of hitting, we can never overlook Dice K's contribution in that department. He drove in two runs with a single in Game 3 of the 2007 World Series, during a six-run third inning, powering the Red Sox to a victory.

As for more recently, Matsuzaka signed a contract with the SoftBank Hawks on December 5, 2014, rejoining Nippon Professional Baseball after eight years in Major League Baseball. Hampered by injuries, Matsuzaka pitched in just one game for the Hawks' farm team in 2015. In 2016, Matsuzaka appeared in his first NPB game in 10 years. He pitched one inning for the Hawks and allowed two earned runs.

I agree, but when you said "He made himself into...an OBP with pop." I wanted everyone to know he was always a high OBP guy.

The "pop" part did develop late as he usually hit about 10 HRs per 600 PAs, then went to 16 at age 28 and 29 at age 29 (without sacrificing 2Bs, I might add)..

And despite all that, he was never a top 100 prospect on any list...

Maybe because he came along before OBP became so highly valued.
