Actually, it worked. I think batters sometimes step out just to upset the rhythm of the pitcher. Tillman had just walked Betts to load the bases for the one and only, the bete noir, David Ortiz. Talking to the ump gave Tillman plenty of time to suck in some more pressure, and he threw four straight no question balls.
