EEI made a point that Lackey would be an attractive trade piece with that option, although it might need to be renegotiated.

It is quite possible that Lester, Lackey, and Peavy will be gone next year.

I certainly hope that some of the hyped young arms in the system ( excluding Workman, he has arrived ) come through next year.

If not, things will get much, much worse.

Workman 7GS 2-1 2.90ERA, 1.05WHIP

let him start. trade Peavy.

Whatever move the Sox may make, they have to keep this guy starting and give him a chance to learn how to go deeper in games.

Presently, he is the one Sox pitcher that I am confident will show up every night and pitch well.

Not the Ace to be sure. But he is very valuable right now.

You're at a decision point, really. You have a bunch of guys who are in AA or higher who have big league potential. You have an ace who will be a FA, who, let's face it, is probably gone at season's end. Peavy is in the last yr of his contract. Buchholz is a f***ing mess. Doubront has been mediocre when on and terrible when off. And Lackey is old, but effective. Sometimes you just have to s*** or get off the pot with these kids. Maybe the sox let Lester go, sign a guy like Masterson for cheaper money, deal Lackey and roll with the kids. It would be a true bridge yr, but it would allow you to see who is good and who isn't.

Lackey is a top 10 starter in the AL. And the Sox pays him 500K next season, why the hell would they want to get him out of town? Maybe pay him the money save from Dempster retirement with a 1 year extension for $15M. So he is paid $15.5M for the next 2 season.

Lester return for a playoff aspiration club could be huge. His post-season track record is amazing. 2.10ERA in 76IP. Top it with Koji in the trade, we should get a blue chipper in return.

And Buccholz/DOubront are on their last legs here. One more injury/ineffectiveness stretch, both may never start a game again for us in 2015. Clay is quite an ass to deal with. Both have replacements by Workman and De La Rosa.

I don't think you can count on De la Rosa being a true replacement at this point. I still think he is the long term replacement for Koji. I can guarantee you Lackey isn't playing for $500K next yr. He is going to get money out of someone, and if he has to go to Japan to do it, he might.

Which is why I said a 1 year extension for lackey at 15M seems very fair. The Red Sox own his rights for 2015, he can't play in Japan either. Can't pull the retirement crap. Pitch well he might get more than 1/15M from soneone.

De La Rosa has 3 plus pitches. He just need consistency. Too good of an arm to be a reliever at this point.

Soriano "retired" in Japan and signed over here immediately. It can work both ways.

Why would he play in Japan for a few millions than just play here for teams to get a better gauge of his performances?

BTW jacko, Lackey can't play for anyone but the Red Sox for 2015. He cannot play for Japan to dodge his 500K salary. It is in the CPA. Japan teams cannot accept him. and vice versa. We've seen Hideo Nomo did it, they crack it down. Tazawa evade the draft in Japan, they have to revise the CPA too after him.
