Great game by Ciriaco.

I stand by what I said upthread. Ciriaco is a starting caliber SS if given the chance. Maybe not a superstar, but if you want a guy who pulls his weight, defends very competently, and can make contact, Ciriaco is good for all of those things.

As in there are 30 starting shortstops in MLB, and Ciriaco ranks 30th, then yes.

As in there are 30 starting SS and Ciriaco might be 15th or 16th if given the chance.

You really think that based on what we've seen, Ciriaco would have any trouble at all hanging with the middle 10 shortstops in this league? As weak as that position is right now?

How many shortstops in the league do you really think can match a .290 BA with ~.400 SLG and average or better defense? Even with the low OBP, considering his position, that's really solid offensive production, and he's at least a non-liability defensively. Ciriaco will eventually get a chance to start at short for someone. You can count on that.

His slash lines in the minors are a .272/.299/.357. He swings at everything, and that will be exposed in the majors. He's not a starting SS.

Yes, the Houston Astros would be glad to have him.

The New York Yankees would be glad to have him

We have a really good situation at short right now. Such a reversal from just a year ago.

Yeah, but what if he's one of those types who becomes Cinderella in the Show? Tell it to the Yankees.

No I do not think Ceriaco could hang with the top 10. Ceriaco suffers from the same malady that stops most AAA ballplayers or AA ball players that make it to AAA from success in the ML. He can't hit curve balls. Smokes FB's but so does every hot super high school ballplayer that ever lived.

He plays decent enough defensive SS. Made Aviles look like a shovel with a glove stuck on the end of it but that ain't hard to do.

While we all like to hammer FO's everywhere for being dolts, as well as believing your eyes you have to believe there is a reason why Ceriaco is a perenial AAA toiler. He is a good backup. He is a guy that can hold down a #1 spot for a couple weeks....his upside is 0. I would love to have him on my bench and would think that if Iggy works out, Drew would be extraneous as long as you have Cerioaco. I really like him cause he absolutely punishes fast balls and I love any hitter who can punish anything. But he gets exposed if he hangs out there in the lineup everyday for too long.

Right...at 27 years old, his minor league numbers tell us he is at best a minor league shortstop. There are more than a few guys out there with similar abilities.

I said middle 10, not top 10.

If you're going to contradict what I say, contradict what I say.

Sorry about that...read it wrong....thought it was middle top 10. But just to be clear, I don't think he is middle ten either as I explained in my post.

Maybe he could hold onto a middle 10 status for two weeks in a pinch but season long....not for my money.

In his final year in the minors he hit .301/.318/.416

The overall slash numbers are pulled down by the first 2 years in the low minors.

This is a man who carried his career in the minors with his glove, and seems to have figured out a swing that's worked consistently for him over the last 2+ years off the bench. That's actually harder in principle than doing the same thing while starting every day. You realize that right?

In other words, when he was pure AAAA, it was because he wasn't hitting, and now he's putting up a full win above replacement last year with his bat as a bench player in the bigs. If you want to be skeptical about that, fine, but I hope you're signing the same tune with Iggy, because it's the same thing.

I don't want the situation we have to devolve until Ciriaco is starting every day because it would mean that some talented players were on the shelf or gone, but if we had to do it, I have no doubt at all that Ciriaco could be well above replacement level as a full time starting shortstop.

I have nothing against Pedro Ciriaco as a utility player, but I'm not going to get carried away. He is not likely to ever be a major league starting shortstop.

Minor league numbers are a very good indicator of major league accomplishment. His first minor league years may have been weak, but his three year AAA slash was also a very weak at .265/.281/.368.

As for the Iglesias reference, he has a three year minor league career. Ciriaco has had an eight year minor league track record. I don't think they are comparable.

Pedro is a great utility guy. He's not an everyday player though. He has a place on this team, but shouldn't be getting 500 AB's.

Ciriaco is who he is---as the saying goes. A fine utility player who can play three infield positions and who has some sting in his bat, especially against the fast ball. However, he gets exposed badly when he plays for long stretches and he still has trouble with breaking ball pitches. What's worse is that he hacks and hacks---very little plate discipline. I like having him on the team----if he is used properly and a full time regular is not being used properly in my opinion. There is a good reason that at almost 28 he has been a decade plus minor leaguer, and also keep in mind the Pittsburgh Pirates got rid of him. Keep him around and use him as a fill in and occasional starter and I believe we will get the best out of him.

He repeated AAA three teams, and was a 26-years-old. He also walked a whopping six times. I'd take those numbers with a grain of salt.
