Ellsbury has to be healthy, and he showed no inkling that he is. Andrus put up a 3.4 WAR last yr, which isnt too shabby. I think the sox are stuck with Ellsbury, and gladly, IMO. They are expecting to get 2011 value but teams wont be offering that. The sox would be stupid to settle on him, and other teams would be stupid to deal the farm expecting he is a 30HR player.

Ellsbury played 74 games after being sat on and having his shoulder dislocated.

Fortunately GM's understand that his injuries have come from freak accidents, not recurring physical issues. His trade value is certainly lower than it was in 2011, but a deal for Andrus straight up is absolutely realistic from both sides.

I have said before that his injuries are due to freak accidents, but he lost his power completely since getting injured. If you look at he player he was at the end of the yr, you'd be hard pressed to get anything for him since he is on a 1 yr deal. He is actually a guy you might get more in return at the deadline than you will in the offseason. If he goes out next yr and has 30 steals, 20 HR and a .300 average by July 31st, then you will get a humongous haul, much more than you will get right now

Agreed. Unless you find someone willing to trade prospects for the 2011 Ellsbury, he's not going to pull in nearly what he is worth to this team.

Every scenario I look at shows me that he's worth significantly more to this team on the roster. If he does well, he's very very valuable at the trade deadline for desperate teams-- and at that point you can probably call up Bradley. If Ells does poorly, he's much more easily signed long term.

I wonder if the sox would look at a guy like Mike Morse. Plays COF or 1B, is a righty power guy and prior to his injury this yr, actually reached base at a good clip. He might be someone you could get who would blossom in Boston

I have brought this up a ton recently. I think he'd be a fantastic fit in Boston.

If you can get 2 years of Andrus for Ellsbury, I would make that deal happen. He's a very good defender, not going to slug much, but he's going to give you a .350-.360 OBP at the top of the order.

It's a good deal from both sides. And from all reports, the Rangers have been doing a lot of homework on Ellsbury, so they're certainly interested in him.

I don't think the Rangers would do a straight up deal like that.

A trade involving Ellsbury and Andrus would currently require the sox to chip in more to even it out. That wasnt the case a yr ago

If the Sox had to chip anything in for Andrus, it would only be because of the extra year on the contract, and it would only be a guy like Stolmy Pimental.

From 2009-2012 (which is how long Andrus has been around), Ellsbury and Andrus have almost identical WAR's. Even with Ellsbury missing a ton of time on the DL, he's still just as valuable over those 4 seasons as Andrus.

That is because Ellsbury had one amazing season. Ellsbury's ceiling is a lot higher, but he's also coming off a terrible, injury plagued yr. Andrus is more consistent

Consistent in staying on the field?

Ellsbury is better at hitting and running the bases.

Andrus has been a very good defender at a premium position. Ellsbury has graded out as inconsistent and lost a ton this yr.

Andrus has a slightly above average bat for a SS, and as you said his value is defense. I wouldn't overpay for Andrus though.

Texas is not going trade Andrus for Ellsbury straight up. Too much talent for an injury-prone CF who can walk next year. Maybe they would give us Derek Holland.

I like Angel Pagan as a replacement for Ellsbury if we trade him. He's a good stopgap in CF. We're going to need one in LF, RF, and 1B. Possibly SS.

Pagan is going to get somewhere in the neighborhood of 4/50 according to Buster Olney. For that kind of money, I'd look into Michael Bourn or Melky Cabrera

Anibal Sanchez .... we need to get him..

I would be okay with that. This team could use a pitcher of 195 innings and 3.86 baseball next season. That 9-13 record is deceiving. I think he would get enough run support in Boston to have a decent record. The only problem is that his interest in staying with Detroit will probably go up, especially if he wins a World Series this year. His price tag is already going up.

The more I think about it, the more I really hope the Sox go after Mark Trumbo for 1B. He's a 40+ HR guy at Fenway.

He's only got a career .780 OPS, and in his career year last year, he had a .808 OPS, so he's not going to cost a ton to acquire. Maybe Garin Cecchini + Jacoby Ellsbury would get a deal close, perhaps adding a guy like Alex Wilson or Drake Britton and receiving a lower ranked prospect along with Trumbo.

Right now, the Angels have Morales, Pujols, and Trumbo. All three are 1B (although Trumbo did attempt to play LF during the year), but going forward they would have the ability to really upgrade their LF with Ellsbury (in terms of overall production, not just HR, and defense included).

I hope Cherrington looks into that deal, because it would make a lot of sense for the Red Sox.

Random thing happened today.

Kalish tweeted out that he was going to head to the Common to toss the frisbee a bit, wanted some people to show up to toss.

So, I showed up, threw the frisbee with him for about 2 hours. Really, really nice guy. Pretty cool afternoon!

Posted

I should also mention that Kalish said he is really excited about Farrell being the new manager.

He also said he moved to Boston because he felt like he should be here since he's finally healthy for the first time in two years.

Here's to hoping the Sox give him a starting job and he takes advantage of his opportunity.

No excuses now Mr K. You already told us you are healthy! Poor guy,,,probably going to live to regret the whole experience by the time we are done with him.
