ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Red Sox are aggressive in their pursuit of Cubs' right-hander Ryan Dempster.

Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago reported on Sunday that ten teams have shown legitimate interest in acquiring Dempster, so the Red Sox are one of many in the mix. Given that Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer are quite familiar with the Red Sox farm system, it will be interesting to see whether this will increase the chances of a deal. Dempster has five and ten rights, so the veteran right-hander has the ability to block any trade, but he has expressed willingness to join any contender.

Idk if this is a good thing. I'd hate to loose a nice prospect for a pitcher on the way to the end of his career.

This sounds like just enough of a move to validate LL's comments about the Sox being aggressive buyers at the trade deadline. By the time the Sox PR machine is done with him, Dempster will be the second coming of Cy Young if they make this deal.

This better not be the alternative to Felix or Garza

I know its been a thread before but really... what would you be willing to part with for the sox to acquire the KING or Garza

I think Dempster would be a good move. We are not going to land an ace at the Trading Deadline, so he is the closest we will come. I can't imagine the price in prospects will be very high. Wouldn't he be just a 2 month rental?

Or this could be a story to make the fans think they are really aggressively trying to improve the team and later we will get excuses about the price being too high.

I think we should just stick with our farm system at this point it was built up pretty good, and instead of trading away possible breakout stars lets see what they got.

It has been indeed, but to answer your question I suppose my untouchables would be 1. Bogaerts 2. Bradley 3. Middlebrooks 4. Barnes. In some cases I wouldnt object to Barnes being involved. I think the first person theyd ask for is Middlebrooks though, however id think long and hard about moving him. Jackie and Xander are just straight up off limits though in my opinion.. As for Garza im not sure whod they be asking for exactly, harder to say then Felix

I am not even sure it matters to Sox Management one way or the other. Whether they land Dempster or not they will spin the same tale one way or the other.

With ten teams vying for his services I would think the chances are pretty slim that the Sox will put together enough of a deal to land him....Come to think of it, we have been down this road before...Sox go after a guy in a crowded field....just about assures they won't get him but can say they tried.

Who would be moving for the sox then? Cause I agree, Theo knows he cant get much for a 35 year old who has a contract expiring soon. It's a safe trade since we don't need to give up Xander, Jackie, Barnes etc

Highly unlikely they'd even think of asking for WMB at this point seeing as how we have dubbed him 3B starter for years to come especially now that Youk is gone.

Trust me the Mariners would be that ballsy. If anything they'd ask for him before Lester

Not interested in Dempster at all. Or Dumpster as be will eventually be known here I'm sure.

Yup. Just another piece added to their group of 3's, 4's and 5's.

Stay away.

The price probably WILL be too high. If the Cubs keep him, they can offer arbitration and get a first rounder. I'd hesitate to GIVE a first rounder to the Cubs to rent a guy who had a near 5.00 ERA last year.

I'd rather have Aaron Cook than Ryan Dempster. That guy's slow s*** would get destroyed at Fenway. Give me the sinkerballer at Fenway over the junk baller.

Aaron Cook with WMB/Iggy/Pedroia/Agon behind him could be very devastating. Cook's first game with Iglesias will be a fun one to watch.

I'd prefer Ciriaco. He is an insane fielder, and he can hit a little bit.

No, with the new CBA, players need to be with their team for a full year in order to get draft pick compensation.

So he may be worth more to the Cubs than he is to his new team.

Oh, I didn't know that, but as you said Theo may think that no one will give up a draft choice for him and he'll be stuck going to arb with him.

Dempster is leading the team in ERA this year. I would bet someone is willing to give up a good pick... I just don't want it to be the Red Sox.

I think they either should go big--like Felix or maybe Garza--or do nothing. They have enough pitchers like Dempster right now. The guy will be a 4+ era in the AL east for sure. Another Penny. Garza has proven effectiveness in the AL east, so he is much preferred. The status quo in pitching is not a bad option right now.

Hamels, I think, will re-sign with the Phillies for Lee money. Don't be surprised if the Yankees get another starter. Hope it isn't Felix. Seattle got burned once with the Montero hype.
