Marrero? Are ya kidding me?

Keith Law had him going 8th overall.

Here's his scouting report:

Summary :

Marrero came into the year as a likely top-five pick because he was a no-doubt shortstop who could hit for average, but poor performance and a perceived lack of hustle this spring have his stock falling more than any healthy college player in this draft.

His hands and instincts are among the best in this draft and he has a plus-plus arm, needing just more work on his feet and throwing accuracy to profile as one of the best defensive shortstops in the game. At the plate, however, Marrero's a mess, courtesy of some unneeded changes to his setup and swing. Marrero starts with his legs closer together this year than he did in the past; his toe-tap trigger is now highly exaggerated and his stride is too long, so he's often off balance or on his front foot at contact and can't drive the ball like he used to do. He starts with his hands high and in, right in front of his right ear, whereas he used to set up over his back shoulder, so his load now is higher and forces him to take more time to get the bat turned around and moving toward the ball.

This is an opportunity draft for a team that thinks it can get Marrero back to where he was mechanically a year ago when he looked like one of the best collegiate hitting prospects in this draft.

The problem is (and even Law mentions it) is that Marrero has attitude problems. Do the Red Sox really need to be drafting guys with attitude problems? Really? Also, he doesn't have any truly outstanding offensive tools.

Don't get me wrong. I am not big on this signing. Seems like Iglesias.

Even when he did (2 years ago), it was hitting for average... the thing most prone to fluctuations from year to year and the least productive offensive skillset to have.

He's Iglesias with a slightly better bat but a corrosive attitude.

Above average =/= outstanding.

And likely a worse glove. I don't know - like I said, I'm surprised and disappointed.

I was disappointed in 2010 when they drafted Vitek too. Kind of reminds me of that pick.

Before this season he was expected to be one of the, if not the top hitting shortstop in college ball. Of course, that argument, must like a batting average dependent OBP is rather hollow.

Pretty much. As Jacksonian said, a safe pick.

Not what i expected. If you have multiple first round picks, you go ceiling first, safety second. But hey, i'm just a fan. I haven't even seen the kid play. I won't sit here and pretend that i know more than the FO and their dedicated scout team, like certain Red Sox fans tend to do.

Yeah, the only thing I can think of is that they picked a guy they think they can sign for less than the slot cap so they can free up money for tougher signs that fall to later picks.

Front office ballwasher.

Thing is' date=' Josh Bell was drafted last yr. This yr's rules make it harder to sign a guy for $3 mil at the back end of the draft[/quote']

I know, he went really late though. That's what I'm talking about.

This is a pretty safe philosophy.

With the rules changes this year it makes sense to get at least one or two guys who are guaranteed to sign (rather than choosing to go to college, etc.,). Given that, it makes sense to me to get the best possible low-sign player who is likely to have MLB skills.

If the Sox go with unexciting players with #31 and 37 I will be shocked. I chalk this one up to $$ strategy.

Pretty much impossible, right? I heard the other day that teams lose future draft picks for players they sign way over slot (something like x% over slot, first round pick, y% over slot, first and second round pick, etc.,) Anyone who knows the rules can correct me, but I'm pretty sure they designed the rules specifically to prevent late round, high priced signings.

I can see the Yankees grabbing McCullers if Texas doesn't. They haven't had much luck with 100mph hurlers in the minors lately, though. Betances has been a mess since they signed him and Brackman literally fell apart.

The rule is about the top 10 rounds. The slot recommendations are pooled and if you go over it by 5%, you are fined 100% on the overage. If you go over by 15%, you are fined 1st rounders
