Well if he does not give up another run and goes 6, his ERA stays where it is...no improvement. If gives up even one more run, his ERA goes up to about 5 again.

Yup. You can't expect a guy to go out there and allow less than 3 ER. Your offense needs to go out there and score some runs, period.
