per ESPN. He mustnt have torn it completely or else he'd need surgery like Youkilis did. He is apparently being fitted for a brace and will try to play through it. If he cannot, he will be DL'd for a month and see from there. Today he tries to swing a bat

It seems that it would be prudent to shut him down for about a week to let him heal and let the swelling and pain subside.

A week wont do him any good, to be totally honest. It must be a small tear if they are allowing him to go through with it. The only problem is that a small tear in a muscle does weaken it and it is possible that he could tear the whole thing if he overextends himself. And a complete tear would be nearly season ending at this point

It would help promote healing and if put in a protective brace after that it should continue to heal.

The week would take down some swelling, but it wouldnt lend to any additional integrity of the muscle. Like I said, it must be a small tear, cause otherwise no doc would want him swinging a bat (the worst thing he could do aside from thumb wrestling) let alone doing it for a living on day 1

Yeah from everything that I've heard it's a minor, small tear to the muscle, no tendon or ligiment damage.

Pedroia seems to think he will not hit the DL, and it's not as though he has t played through injuries before.

I'm just waiting for all the 'Pedroia is injury prone!!!' and 'Yaz played with a cast and sling in 67, Pedroia is soft!!!' comments

If he plays, you won't hear any of it, but yes, Yaz would've played with it taped tight and not just when he was young, but when he was in his late 30's and early 40's. Whatever happened to athletic tape? It's gone the way of the Dodo bird. I guess only boxers use it today. You never see a baseball player taped up. The pampered princesses all have to be pain free to play. We'll see if Pedroia is a throwback. I hope that he is. A one handed Pedroia is better than Punto any day of the week.

Back in my day, we sat in smoke and beer filled pubs and talked Sox with real fans. None of these newfangled internets with strangers.

All joking aside, these ballplayers on the whole are pampered wusses. I laugh when I hear a guy referred to as a warrior. Please!! Not for this group with their mani-pedis.

Let's say BoSox give Pedroia a few days rest like 2-4 days out of the lineup:

In that small time period it might be fun to bring up Inglesias to play SS & put Aviles at 2nd, ya? Just to see give Iggy 4,8,12 ABs... Or not, w/e.

Pedroia is perfect and this thumb s*** is just error trying to weasel its way into our minds.

WWYD? (What Would Yaz Do?) ;)

700, we know what Yaz did. He grew up in a completely different time. The world and baseball were quite different then. Yaz is my all time favorite. Baseball is very different now. I don't see it going back to the way it was (WWYD?) any time soon or in the future. Pedey is tough and if he can play he will. Ultimately, it's not up to him.

Quit sounding like a crotchety old man dammit! ;);)

All pro sports players are pampered, it was one of the biggest reasons for the NBA lockout. Owners pampered the s*** out of the players with everything they could ever want/dream of and then suddenly didn't want to do it anymore. Football players have oxygen masks on the sidelines and people to pour water in their mouths for them.

Once they started giving these guys millions of dollars, they were looked at as investments instead of ball players. And from an investment standpoint, you always want to protect your money. Its better that he rest for 4-6 weeks and come back healthy than it is for him to tough it out, need surgery and be in doubt for the rest of the yr

I don't think a week would matter at all. It is either given time to heal or it isn't, and healing would take at least 3-4 weeks. Fortunately, muscle tissue has a good blood supply and should heal well in time. I think he should be DL'd and not risk more damage.

I can't help it.:dunno: I remember the tough guys. That's why it was surrealistic when Schilling had them stitch up his tendon to pitch in the post season. That was old-time tough.

That was also the playoffs. Schilling would not have done that in May.

I hear ya. To think that morning Schill woke up he could barely walk and then pitched his ass off that night, unreal. That was old time tough. It was the play offs too. Can't imagine that happening during the regular season.

BTW, for the record, I wouldn't have brought up any of the Yaz stuff, but SFF poked me.;)

From May on that season he was taking lidocaine shots in his ankle before each start and towards the end of the season he was taking a second shot during the games.

Getting a shot of some sort (lidocaine, cortisone) is much different than suturing an ankle tendon to play baseball. Still, even doing that in the playoffs earned Schilling a permanent place in Boston baseball lore.

As far as his toughness is concerned...Pedey has nothing to prove to me. I just wonder if he is not really going to be able to swing as effectively while still being stuck with the injury lingering on because he is playing with it. What bothers me about him playing with it is that he injured it weeks ago and then really hammered it during that play in the field. They are not going to be able to brace it while he is in the field.

What a season! We thought all the injuries last year were extraordinary and look at where we are this year.

In the end, all these injuries to position players. while irritating, have not stopped our offense much. We remain second in runs scored and third in OPS. Even without Pedroia for 4 weeks we should still be able to score runs, especially if Gonzalez somehow returns to form. Our success this season will depend on a healthy and effective pitching staff much more than whether or not Pedroia is out for a month. If we get good pitching, we will contend; if not, we won't.

That can’t be an easy injury to play with. You can imagine the vibrations of the bat are going to feel like someone is hammering his thumb every time he makes contact with the ball.

Pedroia's pain would pale in comparison to the pain I will experience if Punto plays every day for a month.
