If you really want to compare him to Rivera' date=' then you are more delusional than I thought.[/quote']

I'm not comparing him to anyone.... Your saying he shouldn't get a contract unless he's rivera, when you have no idea how his career is going to pan out?? If he stays healthy in Philly I see many 35-45 sv seasons in his future... Will he be worth the money when he's closing in on 400 svs???

Because this is what freaking GM's and Owners do. They project out what a player is going to be. They don't give out contracts based on what they know a guy will do. They do it based on things such as Age, Wear and Tear, and what the guys statistics have been recently.

Based on his declining stats and how badly he was struggling down the stretch last year, you do not give him the contract that the phillies gave him.

Are you really this freaking dense?

ETA: His stats actually were better than the previous year but he was showing signs of losing "it" down the stretch last year.

Really?

The worst ever?

Yeah, I guess not paying for Papelbon made us a better team this year than last, oh wait...we have no bullpen.

Yes, the worst ever. You don't give 50 million to relievers. Even if he throws Hall of Fame numbers he won't be able to earn that value. We've had this argument about ten times, and the simple fact is, he isn't the best reliever of all time. He's not even in the top 10 relievers of all time. And somehow he's got the biggest contract for a reliever of all time.

Some guys just can't handle closing..... Proven fact

I would much rather see him in long relief. WTF is Bobby gonna do now?

So by your logic, since the whole team except ellsbury and scutaro SUCKED ASS down the stretch we should get rid of the whole team??? Oh wait.... We did get rid of 1 of guys that WAS hitting down the stretch.... Scutaro

Salaries always increase, never decrease.

There will always be somebody down the road who sets a new record for salary. If it wasnt Papelbon, it will be the next flavor of the month who gets overpaid.
