Well, the truth is that the Royals had a catcher last year (didn't check to see if he is still a Royal) who finished fifth in OPS for the year, Salty being twelfth. There certainly are catchers who are better than Salty, but that doesn't make him the worst ever. Check out the ESPN stat sheet here:

Its a great site to look up all kinds of things. You may already be familiar with it.

thanks for the site....

I'd love to have Carlos Santana too, but let's be realistic.

Lavs had a "somewhat" (i.e. much) smaller sample size than Salty, so comparing them isn't useful. His defensive skills rate worse than Salty's right now, even if the bat is potentially better. Salty had a slow start last year and came on strong until September, so he should get some more rope IMO.

I figured to see him in a platoon with Shoppach once the season starts to roll; that alignment should be good for Salty, who was exhausted at the end of the season and also has a major platoon split vs. LHP.

Its going to be Salty and Shoppach this year. I think Lavarnway will eventually deserve a shot in the majors though. His offensive upside is probably much higher than Salty's, and his defense is improving. The Red Sox will need to decide who to choose because both Salty and Lavarnway are going to be major league caliber starting catchers, probably by next year. Its a good position to be in, having to choose between two decent catchers.

You are welcome.

There is more there too.

Go to ESPN.COM and scroll down to the MLB link and choose STATS.

Lavs clearly has a higher ceiling with the bat and hopefully he can get his defensive skills in order this year.

Salty looked and has looked uncomfortable all spring and now 4 games into the year. I don't know

if it's mechanics but there is a hole in his swing and i truly hope he fixes it since he does have some

upside and everyone thought he would have a better year.

Does the possibility exist of you writing a post that doesn't call out those who don't decide to become f***ing hysterical about anything and everything Red Sox related?

Pretty please?

Well since you put it that way, I can I say no User. Promise---no rose colored glasses for at least a week. Now you do me a favor and use your influence to get us another win tonight. Deal?????

Salty and Shoppach will probably be the combo for the majority of this year. If Salty and Shoppach hit poorly this year, then look for Lavarnway to potentially get called up if we go back to 12 pitchers. It might take an injury to Salty or Shoppach for him to get called up. Lavarnway might get a chance to get some time in during the September callups. I know Bobby V is not big on carrying 3 catchers. Salty isn't much better than Lavarnway defensively. Shoppach is decent defensively. I really hope Lavarnway can be our starter in 2013. He will get his chance in the near future.

I agree. Iglesias has only played 4 games and Lavarnway has only played 5 games this year in AAA, but they are struggling at the plate to start the year. Middlebrooks is doing solid after 6 games in AAA. Ciriaco, Nava, Repko, and Gomez are all having solid starts in Spring Training. With Ciriaco being 26, does anyone think that he could realistically be used as trade bait? I know that a team would probably love to have him as a backup IF or even a starter. I don't know what we could get in return for him. Maybe a decent bullpen arm. I don't really consider him a prospect because of his age. He doesn't have a chance to start at 2B because of Pedroia. He doesn't have much of a chance to start at SS or 3B because of Bogaerts, Middlebrooks, and Iglesias.
