So said Hal Steinbrenner, the team's managing general partner and the younger son of the late George M. Steinbrenner III, who on Thursday confirmed what his general manager, Brian Cashman, has been saying all winter: that over the next two seasons, the Yankees payroll would be drastically trimmed, all the way down to $189 million by the start of the 2014 season.

It's gonna be hard to do, especially when he keeps overruling Cashman and forcing his hand on relievers and over the hill third basemen. We have a system capable of having sustainable success. He just needs to not deal it away for quick fix players. I liked how he managed the Montero situation and got a young, cost controlled kid back. That's the way to go these days
