He's going to get years dude, no way he gets under 8 years. Plus, he's the best offensive player (discounting Barry Bonds) since Ted Williams, and will retire one of the best ever to play the game. I could definitely see him being an effective offensive weapon into his late 30s, or even 40s.

I know he is the best player in baseball, and it's really not that close. I know he is going to produce unbelievable numbers for awhile longer. But if he is indeed clean, his body will start breaking down in a few years.

He is going to be compared to A Rod. A Rod signed his 2nd big contract right around the same age. He hasn't produced at the same level since. Even the best players break down and become more injury prone, that's just life. To expect Pujols to put up these numbers for another 10 years is ridiculous. I see him putting up MVP numbers for 2-3 more years before he tears a hamstring, then tweaks an ACL, then tears his labrum, etc.

The realist in me sees a terrible contract by 2015.

According to ESPN' date=' the Nationals may make a stealth offer of 10/300. They are assuming he resigns with the Cards at 9/243 tho. Regardless, he's gonna get PAID. [b']I honestly can't justify more than 5/140[/b], but that's just the rational side of me trying to understand a 37 y/o 1B making $28M for another 4 years.

Arod got 300M from the Yankee's , Pujols is better than Arod so it would not suprise me if he lands somewhere for over 300 M

I know. I'm not saying he won't, I meant I can't see giving him that much. Same thing I said about A Rod a few years ago.

He will definitely get more than $240M from a dumb organization that tries to justify it by talking about milestones and records.

But as far as Pujols being better than A Rod? I disagree, I don't think there is a clear distinction as to who is actually better.

Pujols has allready 8 season of 1000 + OPS 4 of them over 1100 - 31 years old

Arod has 6 and none over 1100 - 35 years old .

Career OPS at 1037 compared to 953 Arod

give Pujols 5 more extra years and he would most likely surpass Arod's current HR totals.

To each his own. I don't see Pujols really coming close to Bonds' record. 625-650, max.

the only way he only ends up with 625-650 is if he starts to get injured.

In all fairness, you're comparing a SS/3B to a 1B. Pujols has better offensive numbers, but that doesn't necessarily make him more valuable. That being said, Pujols will crush Arod's career numbers.

That's what I'm saying. He will just become more and more injury prone as he ages. It's 200 more HRs. He's averages around 40 a year, that's 5 more full seasons worth, barring injury. 10 years is way too long.

I agree with the 10 year contract BUT, I'd rather give a 10 year contract to a 1B than a SS/3B as there less likely to be injured and more durable.

Pujols is the type of player I would gamble on a 10 year contract.

He's most likely going to over perform the early years anyways so it would balance out at the end.

How does a deal along these lines sound?

10 years guaranteed. Vesting options for the last 6. At the very most, it is a 10/290. At the least, a 10/230.

1 35M

2 35M

3 35M

4 35M

5 25M with 600 PA and Top 20 MVP. $15M otherwise.

6 25M with 600 PA and Top 20 MVP. $15M otherwise.

7 25M with 575 PA and Top 25 MVP. $15M otherwise.

8 25M with 575 PA and Top 25 MVP. $15M otherwise.

9 25M with 550 PA and Top 30 MVP. $15M otherwise.

10 25M with 550 PA and Top 30 MVP. $15M otherwise.

The least he's every done is 634 PA over 143 games and 9th in MVP voting. This gives him a chance to be able to get an injury and still make the required number of PA and contribute to the team.
