Terrible blow to the Yankees. They pretty much have to win every year to justify their budget.

The playoffs are all about pitching, and there was a question about whether the Yankees had enough

to get them through.

The other thing is anybody can win in a short 5 game series. The Cardinals don't have anywhere near the team the Phillies have, for example, but have taken them to 5 games.

There is an upside and a downside to the playoffs format. The two best teams this year, the Phillies and Yankees, may not get to the World Series.

I was talking to my father about the fact these first round playoffs are so short.

It doesn't matter if you're the best theam in baseball, you have to allow for a bad game here and there and still have a chance. With how it is right now, you cannot make a mistake. You pretty much have to be on your game 100% of the time.

It should be a best of seven in all rounds. Every other sport does it so why not Baseball?

The MLB post season playoffs are way short as it is with only 8 teams making it, now you have to play short series as well.

Something needs to be twieked to allow more chances for both teams alike.

Tigers were only on their game for 3/5. Pretty sure that doesn't equal 100%.

The Yankees won 97 games. The Tigers won 95. Are they really better? Didn't we hear in 2006 how the Yankees were better than the Tigers and the Yankees lost? In the past 10 years, the Yankees have made the playoffs 9 times. They are 4-0 against the Twins in the first round. They are 0-5 against the rest (Twice against Detroit, Twice against the Angels, Once against Cleveland) It's also not like Cabrera, Martinez, or Avila had a great series. The best thing the Yankees can do this offseason is get Fatbathia on Nutrisystem.

We lost by one run in game 5 of the ALDS vs a team that I think will go on to win the world series (I think Philly is doomed with their pedantic offense). Hardly a choke. It sucks, but it happens. There isnt much that needs cleaning on our end.

Its always a stinker when your team loses a big game, but thats about as much as I can say to a Yankee fan. I hope the Tigers do go all the way. Besides my Red Sox I root for the Cubs then the Tigers. It actually was a pretty exciting game. I thought maybe Jeter was gonna make the big hit but it didnt happen.

@jacksonianmarch

You dont think Holiday is gonna kick some butt tonight? I actually think Philly will win. But hey thats just my thoughts.

Agree with this. A 5 game series doesn't prove anything.

Also, 162 games with the best record has to be worth more than just home field advantage for a series.

The best record AL and NL teams should get a first round bye.

Good argument. The Yankees get so much media attention the Tigers winning 95 games was overlooked.

I just watched the last few innings of last night's Tigers-Yankees game.

Benoit and especially Valverde gave the Yankees nothing good to hit. Everything on the corners. Good pitching.

The ALDS/NLDS is fine as it is. Regular season means nothing in the play offs. If you are such a good team... You can win a 5 game series. Period. It's not gonna change anytime soon.

I love that the Yankees are out but we really have no room to talk. Plus we're going down to Yankees fan level. Lets just enjoy them being on vacation and hopefully beat their ass next year.

I agree. But it's always nice to be able to crap on the NYY. Glad they are enjoying the off season along with us now.

All is right in the Baseball World.

Faulty asumption.

Anything can happen in the playoffs. Even the most shittiest of teams can jump on you if they make it.

In a short series you dont have much room for failures. If you think the best team should win in a 5 game series period, then clearly you're fooling yourself. Yankees are a better team then the Tigers, Brewers are a better team then D'backs and they backed brewers into a corner and just barely escaped with a victory to win. Phillies are also a better team then the Cards and look how this game is going.

Luck has more to do then actual skills in short series.

It's funny how this thread survives whereas my thread on the ALDS was deleted. I guess no one cares about the Red Sox-less playoffs unless they can celebrate a Yankee loss.

Lets just hand whoever wins the regular season (most wins) the WS then. f*** the playoffs.

Ummm, who's talking about handing the best team anything? Read son.

I was talking about expanding these playoffs to a best of 7 all throughout.

1, you get more chances and 2, the absolute best team would definately win on a best of 7. You wont need to rely on luck as much as you would with a chance series. (Best of 5)

Hey, this playoff format sucks. Honestly. First, the Yankees. now the Phillies.

The best teams through 162 games, then out in a 5-game series, 3-2.

Something wrong here. Probably what's needed is a bye in the first round for the top team in each league.

The least they can do is go 7 games. 5 games is too short for the cream to rise to the top.

Time for Steinbrenner to kick like hell and get Selig to work.

Every time the Yankees lose to a team from the AL Central it's because the playoff format. The Yankees weren't complaining when they beat Minnesota in a best of five every year. Why are the Yankees better? Because they have 2 more wins over a 162 game schedule? It's like people in New York don't realize baseball exists outside of New York. Mike Francesa didn't even know who Al Alburquerque is. I doubt the Yankees would win two games in a row against the Tigers with Verlander pitching at least one more game.

Yup, luck never/hardly comes into play in any game. Thanks for that point.

You're missing the point.

Luck plays a role in all games. Luck plays a larger role in short series. The Yankees, Phillies and you can say Brewers all fall into that category. 2 out of of those 3 teams felt victims to the first round playoffs format.
