It hurts less if you have no expectations. I was trying to spare you the pain you were putting yourself through. You are very ungrateful.

You make me laugh.

Thanks for looking out for my expectations. I find that wins like tonight make the whole venture of loving baseball entirely worth it. Completely gratifying. All the better because I let myself care.

Better to have love and lost-- that malarkey?

I love them too... so back off. I loved them for decades before you. I gave them the best years of my life.

From the stuff I just watched on NESN he said someone from the media texted him about some personal stuff. He looked pretty pissed about it.

oh christ, who cares. Just suck it up and move on. John, you pitched a really valiant game. The type of thing that could resurrect your career here in Boston if you match it with some decent playoff appearances.

I'm not able to see. What's he saying?
He says that someone in the press texted him a half an hour before the game about something personal, and he said it was over the line. He's really pissed.

Maybe someone from the Red Sox should just try to piss off Lackey before a start? It seems to work. Not necessarily personal stuff, that's too far, but he pitches much better angry than sad.

The guys he is talking to probably had nothing to do with it.

Weird, weird twist to an otherwise good night.

Lost in all of this is the fact that, I believe, Ellsbury now has the record for RBI by a leadoff hitter in the history of baseball. Someone else can confirm that, but a brief search online identifies some other guys who approached 100, but none at his level. Is this the MVP this year?

How did Drew look tonight?

Honestly, I didn't think he looked too bad. He prompted me to ask something like "I've he's able to stay in the game throughout then why hasn't he played at all before now? Pussy." Or something to that end.

He looked like Drew, but that means patient. Frankly, with the way the team has looked lately, a bit of Drew's patience might be sorely needed.

He certainly should be right up there in the voting. I am surprised that no lead off hitter in history had 100 RBI in a season.

All season long his swing has lacked authority. He had been flailing at the ball all season due to the shoulder. Did he look like he was throwing the bat at the ball or did he drive through it?

Me too. I don't have that confirmed, but an internet search didn't give other names. I think Darren Erstadt was mentioned.. in 2000 he had 100 exactly. Otherwise, I looked at Rickey Henderson and he never had more than 75.

Seems like Ells might be tops. As far as WAR goes, Fangraphs has him as the MVP, with 8.8 WAR.

The Lackey clubhouse incident was very strange. When they cut back to the NESN studio, TC and Rice looked like deers caught in the headlights. They didn't know what to say.

I thought he looked more like old Drew than pathetic Drew, but the sample size is pretty small. It was just reassuring to have a guy up there who could decipher a pitch and either swing or not swing.

He's having a breakout season like Yaz in '67. Before '67, yaz was a top player-- a Batting Champion, but he never had combined avg, power and production before '67.

We could certainly use some patience at the plate, but I am hoping he can drive through the ball.

It's just remarkable the way that he's squaring up the ball.

Given that he didn't look that way for awhile in previous years, I'm hopeful that a guy like Crawford can turn it around and start ripping it a bit too starting next year. When your timing and confidence is off players can look like they have never hit a ball before. Ells looked that way earlier (remember when he was hitting 9th?).

Anyway, a great win tonight. Time for me to hit the bed. Nite bud, bring the good luck tomorrow night.

See you tomorrow. A big exhale...whew!

I honestly think Lackey has worn out his welcome big time... we all get that he's going through a ton of s*** with his wife being sick and all, but that doesn't give him carte blanche to act like a f***ing douchebag everytime someone does something or says something he doesn't like.

I wish the guy well in his personal life and would love nothing more than for him to pitch well in the playoffs, but he's got to get his s*** in control. And soon.
