It's the pitching, not the hitting. Even with injuries.

Right now, their pitching isn't good enough for the playoffs--maybe not good enough to limp into the playoffs.

I'm completely comfortable in a short series when we throw Beckett and Lester 4 times. And I'm comfortable in a 7 game series when we throw Beckett/Lester/Bedard/Aceves-Buchholz piggyback.

Or hell, even throw Aceves-Buchholz piggybacked as your #3.

You can't put into words how important Buchholz would be to this team out of the bullpen. If he can come back, we can slide him into the 7th inning role. When we use him in the 7th inning, we can use Aceves as our #3 starter and Bedard as our #4 starter in a long series. You can pair up Buchholz with Aceves and let Buch go 2 IP, and make a hell of a starter out of that combo.

I don't think that Deadbeat Dad Bedard can be counted on for anything.

It's against my religion to root for the Yankees. I've never done it before in my life and I plan on keeping it that way. Like Coco said we win' date=' it won't really matter what the Rays do.[/quote']

You want to assess that train of thought again?

All the Red Sox do is lose.

Yankees just save the Red Sox from been overtaken by the Rays just now. (Provided the Yanks win the game they are already leading)

I'll light the fuse.

Dont get carried away newbie.

Doesn't Yankees have their own boards? Why they gotta come to a Red Sox one? lol

I'm rooting for the Rays to lose. I will never have any satisfaction of cheering on those punks. Like a700 or BornToRun said earlier maybe if they're playing team Al-Qaeda but no promises..

I can understand your frustration since the Yankees have owned the Sox for decades..... Man it must be tough to be associated with such a loser organization. ha ha ha ha

Another year, another Red Sox CHOKE................:harhar:

I'd rather fornicate myself with a lit stick of dynamite.

Then you can join Big Poppy, he does that on a regular basis......... :harhar:

I'm breaking this out from tonights game thread (I think that's where Coco posted it):

They went 21-11 in September/early October to finish the regular season.

Point is, it'll be tough to find a comparable finish that led to a good result. Earlier in the month I was comforting myself with the 2006 Cardinals and Tigers, but they didn't finish nearly as bad as the Sox are. 5-15 in a month is unfathomably bad.

If you remember, at the beginning of the season I did a B-R search to see which teams had ever started that poorly to have success at the end of the season. I found a few that made it to the playoffs and a couple that won the WS.

I tried to do the same thing for this type of finished and really struggled to find one.

In fact, I think there is only one comparable recent example that offers any optimism:

2000 NY Yankees

That Yankees team went 5-16 in its last 21 games.

They won the division by 2.5 games over the Sox.

They won only 87 games.

They lost their last 7 games.

They ended up winning the World Series.

It is little hope, I realize.

In order for the Sox to match that last 21 games the Yankees had, they would need to go 2-4 the rest of the way.

Given that, I wouldn't say it is out of the realm of possibility.

The Yankees played better ball in September than the Red Sox have this year, despite their s***** finish. However, the Sox already have more wins than that Yankees team had at the end of the season, so maybe that equals out? :dunno:

It should not be forgotten that the Yankees played the Mets in the World Series that year. They were a suck ass team. Most Mets fans can't name 5 players from that team and I'll spot them Mike Piazza.

The Yankees won the WS that year after a horrible end of the season in which their play didn't warrant a post-season appearance at all.

They had the 5th best record in the AL that year, but got in anyway. (the Central and West both had 2 teams with better records).

Hey, it's ONE story of a team that was ultimately successful totally blowing at the end of the season.

They played very poorly at the end. Torre had burned out a lot of his bullpen as usual. However, my recollection is that they were not also injured. The 2011 Sox are playing terribly and they have no one to run out to the mound who doesn't stink, and Youk, our cleanup hitter, is down.

Don't disagree with you here, that's for sure.

Of course, I would give them a decent shot against the Tigers. I think Beckett can pitch well enough to beat the Tigers, even against Verlander, and I think LEster is better than the Tigers' #2. The Rangers would destroy this team right now.

At this point, I'll just be "happy" with a playoff appearance and complaining during the offseason. I just like extra games late in the season.

This is fabulous. You may have a hard time rooting for our guys but you'll cheer every game we win in our upcomng series with the Rays. Good luck and I hope we get to play the Sox in the pennant race!

Well, in regards to this question, thats tough. We (Sox fans) are in a rough position here. I have always hated the Yankees ever since I was a youngin. However, it would be nice to see the Rays loose these next two games so we dont have to go down to Tampa Bay on Thursday and play them for the final playoff spot of the American League. So um I guess (just for the next two games) I will hope that the Rays loose to the Evil Empire. (sigh) Just cant win, damn it!!!! :(
