    • Trayvon Robinson

    • Considering what we dealt, doesn't matter, we still won.

As I understand the mechanics of the deal that brought Bedard in, we briefly controlled prospect Trayvon Robinson from LAD, before flipping him for Bedard.

The more I think about it, the less sure I am that that was definitely a winning move. Trayvon's a stud and we'd control him beyond this year.

He might have been a candidate to claim a role in right field or even center, since he's a switch hitting 3 position guy, and he would have helped our lefty-righty balance on that basis. With the DH spot open and right field possibly up for grabs, he really wasn't "blocked" in any meaningful sense here either. Reddick would have given him a run for it, but he coulda won that footrace.

So I'm basically curious where you guys come down on that. I know Bedard's been really useful now, but I'm left with the thought that we coulda had 6 years of Robinson, and are probably only going to get a couple months of Bedard. It's a tossup at best and if this kid really takes off in Seattle of all places, it's going to look a little bad for us going forward.

We needed a pitcher, we got one. Plus it isn't like we have an issue with outfield depth. We have Kalish and Reddick to duke it out for RF and Center and Left are set for several more years. I take Bedard every single time in this situation.

Robinson is more talented and a better prospect than either Kalish or Reddick.

I would rather have parted with either of those two for Bedard rather than Robinson.

Well, all I'm saying is that given the needs of the club, I'm going Bedard. We didn't need an outfielder, we needed a pitcher. We got a very good pitcher for a very good prospect.

And next year?

I'm focused on this year. If RF were an issue going forward, then yes I'd be more towards Trayvon if not completely for him, but we have two guys who, while not as talented, could fill the spot just fine.

Centerfield's an issue at some point in the undistant future.

Not until 2014, you're referring to Ells right? I want to win now and Bedard is our best chance at doing that. Robinson would've been a nice piece to have in our farm but he isn't essential.

In spite of the Globe's obvious campaign for Lackey, with his 5+ ERA and 1.5 Whip, Bedard has shown he is a much better pitcher. Tito didn't replace him against Napoli the other night when the situation dictated it, but that's Tito.

Despite the media's antagonism towards Bedard, he has already shown he is the best #3 starter the Red Sox have--until proven otherwise.

Robinson was in the Dodgers farm system--he wasn't going to Boston even if they got Kuroda. He was the reason they were able to get Bedard. Theo laid some excellent groundwork for that deal trying to get Kuroda. Seattle wanted Robinson.

The Red Sox don't need hitters or more HRs. They need more pitching.

Bedard has not been effective in a sox uniform. In his last outing, Francona should have put Albers in to relieve Bedard. I cannot see Bedard being a long term solution to their pitching roster. However, considering their predictiment with injuries to Bucholz and Dice-K they improvised and had to settle on Bedard.

Bedard's been fine, he was okay aside from that one bad pitch to Napoli. He had a 3.38 heading into that start.

This depends on many things, but right now I'd go with Bedard. If we are able to sign Bedard for the future then I think that's the right answer. Otherwise if he leaves and we don't have him for the future, considering that we won't have draft picks, then we'd have been better off with Robinson.

So in the short term, I'd go with Bedard, but in the long term I think I'd go with Robinson.

That said, I'm not particularly worried about giving up Fife, Federowicz or Rodriguez, although I think that Chiang and Robinson could have done well in Fenway.
