Red Sox catcher/DH slugger Ryan Lavarnway will join the team in Kansas City and it looks like Kevin Youkilis is going to do some DL time because of a sore back. We'll have more details as they become available.

Lavarnway, 25, has split the season with Class AA Portland and Class AAA Pawtucket, playing 55 games with the Sea Dogs then being promoted for 55 games with the PawSox. He has 30 home runs and 85 RBI.

We should just start a DL thread.

On the bright side, we have a humongous lead on the Wild Card and this will give us time to get everyone healthy and rested for October.

This may actually be a good thing. Who knows, maybe Lavarnway can hit on the road. We know that Youk sure cant.

.191/.310/.356/.666 on the road.

.210/.319/.390/.709 in the 2nd half.

Maybe he can get healthy and give us the boost we need in September.

Anyone who recognized that an easily-hurt first baseman moving back to third full time -- a more athletic position -- offers an increased opportunity for injury and a drastically increased chance that the player in question will be "playing through something" at any given time.

Seriously, everyone knew that that was the one biggest risk -- the risk of exposing Youkilis at third I mean -- in the Adgon trade/signing.

So looks like Lowrie or Aviles at third for the next little while. If it's Lowrie, we can probably deal with it. Lowrie's due to go on a bit of a hitting run.

It's truly a shame that Middlebrooks isn't closer to being MLB ready. Obviously Theo would never pull a player from AA to MLB without even a cup of coffee in AAA, but I wouldn't be too upset to see Middlebrooks get a few games in at the MLB level. He can't be any worse than Lowrie has been.

Lowrie since coming off the DL: .148/.172/.259/.432. Are you kidding me. Not to mention his defense has been putrid at best.

you want to argue with the numbers, feel free. He's poor at short because he doesn't have great range for the position, that's not a big issue at third, a few untimely recent fauxs pas doesn't change that.

Career at third (300+ innings) Lowrie's got +6.5 UZR/150 at third base. That's an above average result.

For comparison's sake, Youk was -2.7 this year And +3.7 for a career. Both are part timers, so it's pretty apples-to-apples. We might even gain in run differential if Jed hits at all.

I started an injury thread in January.

Middlebrooks would be up for half the teams in baseball. but not the Sox. You have to work your way up the minor league ladder with this team. They just don't have a lot of openings on the ML roster. Not with the way they hang onto veterans.

Lowrie, like many players, has to play regularly to hit to his career stats.

Well, to be fair, Middlebrooks is only 22 and is having a complete breakout year. Plus he started the year in A ball, moved up to AA and had a hell of a year. But regardless, his plate discipline isn't there yet. He struck out 92 times in 367 AB in AA (25%), which would translate to roughly 150 K's in a 600 AB season. He's still learning, all I'm saying is that it's a shame he isn't ready to take that big step to the MLB yet. He'll get there, probably starting 3B in 2013 if he continues his progress.
