SoxSport Verified Member Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 I don't think Theo and Tito are on the same page. I can't figure Crawford--another speedster is not exactly down Tito's alley. Looks like Theo was trying to make a speed team without a speed manager. How else can you explain Crawford not stealing the other night against NY with Pedey up? Crawford was good for 6 SBs per night against the Red Sox for Tampa Bay. He has 18 SBs total this year. If that isn't symptomatic of a problem on the Red Sox, nothing is. Epstein did not get his money's worth. And it has nothing to do with OBP, by the way. Crawford has never had a high OBP. Crawford was glued to 1B the other night when he should have taken off on the first or second pitch, as soon as he got on. That would not have happened in TB. Theo paid $20 million for a speed guy on a team that does not value speed, and is basically indifferent to holding runners on base to prevent steals. The team sucks on fundamentals.

There is something horribly, horribly ironic about their propensity to get stolen-against to death while not being able to take a base when it matters. Clearly, Crawford is f***ed in the head right now. He's a guy who always looked so natural stealing bases in the past. Suddenly he looks nervous. Both he and Lackey need some therapy in the offseason. I'm not even kidding. Crawford needs the more "normal" sports psychology type therapy. Lackey needs the "real" 'work out your s***' kind of therapy. I would also suggest that Ellsbury, Crawford and Pedroia spend the off-season working out together. Help Crawford feel like a central and important part of the team. I'm still optimistic that Crawford can become the player we all know he is. Also, between Ellsbury, Crawford and Kalish I can envision a tremendous OF moving forward. Maybe just not this year.

Crawford has the green light. He's too busy being scared shitless to make anything happen.

Wish you would see these kind of insight in the local media. But you don't. Most are still defending Tito and "his" two championships.

Just my perspective, but why wouldn't he have the green light? He has had 7 45+ steal seasons. It only makes sense that he has the green light, especially because of what he is capable of. Yes, he has underperformed this year, but he still has the potential to be a threat on the base paths. I'm hoping next year we have three 25+ steal guys in Pedroia, Ellsbury, and Crawford. He has not met expectations at all, but also remember this is just his first year here. Let's see how he performs next year. If he hits .300 with 45 stolen bases next year, I will be extremely happy, as I'm sure the rest of Red Sox Nation will be as well.

But the Red Sox are a strange outfit in some ways. Their management, for example, seems indifferent about stealing bases--one way or another. Teams steal their pitchers blind. Ellsbury, for example, has had only 10 steals since the all-star break, vs 28 before the break. 2 steals in September, caught 4 times. It's hard to believe, but I think Francona's lack of intensity has transferred to the players.
SoxSport Verified Member Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Ozzie Guillen was just let go by the White Sox. Ha. Ozzie is just about as opposite to Tito as you can get. He would shake the pillars of Fenway.
Cocos Disciples Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 Ozzie Guillen is a f***ing awful manager. Very glad he's not coming here.
