Since I presume you mean "go after from outside the org" my answer is that it's too early to tell. A number of factors that could change the answer between now the offseason, including what happens with Miller, Weiland, Wakefield and Bedard. If we think we can fix Bedard's arm problems healthwise it might pay to keep him around. Ditto for Miller if he conntinues to show signs of progress with his command. Weiland meanwhile just needs to make ordinary progress to be at least a depth option.

If the Erik Bedard move works out for us then I don't see the Sox making any moves for starting pitching this winter. Our starting rotation for next year would be Beckett - Lester - Buccholz - Lackey - Bedard.

We aren't going to be able to offload Lackey's contract and I don't think we'll be able to offload Dice-K either. So as long as we are lumbered with Lackey and Dice-K and we have Beckett, Lester, Buccholz and Bedard, I don't see us making any significant moves for more starting pitching.

Bedard's a free agent next year. We'll be involved in the Sabathia sweepstakes to drive up the price on him if nothing else.

There's a ton of good options out there. Sabathia, Buehrle, Jackson, Wilson. I imagine we'll acquire whichever pitcher has the most reasonable demands and then stock up on a couple low risk, high reward gusy like Bedard, Duchscherer, Webb, Wang, etc.

Abysmal is too strong a word. But yes, especially in the upper minors most of our best pitching prospects are struggling, hurt or gone.

Most of the pitching in the minors has been abysmal including Raunado

Ranaudo is 3 years off if ever.

Other than that there isn't the next ceiling of Lester, Buchholz or Masterson.

I think we might want to make Bard a starter. TEX with that with Wilson and Ogando. Give Bard a chance to stretch out next spring.

Considering what happened the last time Bard was a starter you might want to hold off on that. We've got a good thing going with him. Mess with that only if and when you have to.

If you give up on all prospects with a bad year might as well ask all of them to return their bonuses.

He struggles for a number of reasons. Including the Sox changing his mechanics. He would struggles as a reliever then too.

I don't see anything wrong with giving him a chance. He said he wants to try it as well.

I don't think that would make sense for next spring. There are A TON more quality starting pitchers than there are relief pitchers on the market after this season.

I'd love to see the Sox make C.J. Wilson a priority. If not with the Sox, I definitely do not want him with the Yankees...or even back in the American League.

I wouldn't wanna pay him too much though. He's gonna be very expensive and he isn't a young guy.

He will be very expensive. He will be 31 next year, but he has excellent mechanics. In this day and age, it looks like the three year contract for an ace like pitcher is about over, so he may be too old to invest in a five to six year contract.

We have to make a legit run at CC. Although many assume it is a foregone conclusion he will return to NY, there are a number of reasons why he should go to Boston aside from money and a legitimate chance at another world series ring:

1) Our team is younger

2) Better defense

3) We have one of the best game callers in Varitek and Salty is young and has a high ceiling.

4) There is more stability and talent in our rotation 1-4 (Lester, Beckett, Buchholz, and Lackey) vs theirs (Nova, Burnett, Hughes, and a ? since Garcia and Colon are up there in age).

5) Tito is one of, if not, the best player-friendly managers in the game.

6) Fan base is just as, if not more passionate than NY.

7) Tying into #4, he would possibly buy into the idea of becoming a part an all-ace pitching staff after seeing the success of Philly.

8) Would not have to move his family (if he chose) due to the close proximity of Boston relative to NY.

Many intangibles working in our favor...

Wilson will get a Lackey sized contract' date=' if not better. I'd hold off.[/quote']

I too would steer clear of CJ. He is a relatively over-hyped late bloomer. Let Texas and a bunch of s***** teams with delusions of winning (Nationals, Orioles, etc.) bid on his services.

Why is he over-hyped? He has been an effective starting pitcher for a year and a half now. I am not sure he won't demand too many years to be lured away from Texas though. If Sabathia isn't out there, he will be the best option I see out there.

Or he may be interested in joining that success in Philly.

He isnt a "late bloomer". He was a closer for them, and when Feliz made his way to the bigs, he asked to move into the rotation. He isnt some bum who turned it on at 30, he'd always been really good

And really, when did "late bloomer" become a negative aspect with pitchers? Sandy Koufax and Warren Spahn were late bloomers...and in the Hall of Fame.

King!, King!, King! Can you imagine Beckett-King-Lester-Buch-Lackey and why not Bedard as a backup or 6-man rotation set up .

Sounds like a Philly rotation.
