Hi guys and girls,

after watching the 16 long innings the other night you have to ask yourself should Titto have pulled the pin and let the game go to tampa early rather than push all the way to 16 innings at early hours of the morning knowing they had to fly out to baltimore. I am sure that the late late game will affect the performance of the whole team for days if not a week. Any athelete will tell you that the next day is fine its usually the days after that which start affect you untill you recoup, but lucky they have thursday off. should he have allowed the game to get away in order to save his troops for the long battle?

cheers

Mick

If I stopped going to message boards, it would be because of people who joined them and immediately started calling people idiots. Bye.

Winning in the 16th was a victory that means a lot to a team. I mean, we exhausted the bullpen but came out victorious. You can't go that far and not get the win, think how s***** they might feel on top of being tired AND with Beckett going 9 innings of 0 walk 1 hit baseball.... you gotta at least it win it for him if you can't get him the win on his record. I was thinking of this today and the 16 inning win is a good trade for the loss today behind our rookie Weiland.

I actually think that Francona has been known to do this very thing. Often I'd see him trot out whoever is doing the worst out of the bullpen to break the stalemate.

All of the other major sports use ties. Why not baseball? Japan does it. Extended extra innings wears out the players, it can mess up the rotation, and it always destroys the bullpen, and the fans are the ones who have to be up at 6 o clock the next morning.

All the other major sports do not use ties, what gave you that impression? In fact sports are going away from ties. Basketball plays extra periods. Hockey goes to the shootout, and plays sudden death in the playoffs. Football plays sudden death overtime.

Only soccer in the US plays to a tie. and in the playoffs, they use penalty kicks.

For some reason I didn't think about basketball because those games are so incredibly short as-is. But football has them (and plays so few games they probably shouldn't). Hockey shootouts are close enough. Soccer has them. Tennis doesn't need them (sorry Isner). Golf only uses them for the final round and its rarely necessary.

Name one other sport where you could potentially be sitting in the stands for five hours. I've been at two extra innings game this year, and let me tell you, games should NOT run longer than public transportation.

Cricket. And then some. A cricket match can be a weekend event.

Also -- golf, tennis, etc. aren't major sports any more than boxing, MMA or horse racing.. They're niche sports with large followings. Not a bad thing to be. But the big 4 is the big 4 and the big 4 don't use ties.

I mean what are you going to do, go to a home run derby? Use Hits as a tiebreaker? Both have some legitimacy to avoid extra frames, but extra frames are so traditional that you're not likely to see it.

What's more reasonable is simply starting the game earlier. But the broadcasters won't let you do that so where does that leave us?

Japan declares a tie if a baseball game goes past the 12th.

Personally, I think the MLB needs to speed up baseball. Guys like Dice-k and Papelbon who take a full minute between pitches need to penalized.

The pitchers aren't any more of a problem than hitters who are forever calling time. The fact is that controlling the speed of the game is part of the gamesmanship of baseball. You really can't compress a baseball game into 2 hours without reducing it to a 6 inning game.

The whole charm of the game is that they don't keep clock. It's part of what makes baseball, baseball, I'd be very slow to sacrifice that.

There are just too many of these games in a season. I'm all for playing until someone scores. Both teams shouldn't throw the game though.

There is a difference between taking away the advantage of being able to control time' date=' and taking forever to play the game.[/quote']

There's a difference between taking three hours to play a game, and taking forever to play a game. I don't give two shits how long it takes between pitches, it's baseball, there's no clock, there never has been clock, I hope there never is clock, at least while I'm watching.

I really don't care if games take a long time, we all knew baseball was a game that runs a long time when we started watching.

There is an entire generation of baseball fans who grew up in the steroid era. Baseball needs to change with the times instead of obsessing over tradition if it wants to hold the attention span of younger fans. Everyone who I have ever talked to who isn't a baseball fan cites one reason "its boring" and personally, I get a little bored when waiting extended amounts of time in between pitches as wel.

I would like to see one or two extra innings allowed. Then if it is still a tie give the win to the team with the most hits.
