He missed a full month last year and still put together a historically good season. I'm not worried it at this point.

Anyone would be. I was advocating for us picking up a starting pitcher before this came out about Buchholz or Lester was pulled from his start. There were no signs of injury to Lester though so I'm not going to assume that he was seriously hurt.

Buchholz will not return any time soon

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — As the non-waiver trade deadline approaches, how the Red Sox proceed could be influenced by the growing evidence that Clay Buchholz will not be ready to pitch any time soon.

The righthander, out since June 17 with a muscle strain in his lower back, didn’t even respond positively when asked whether he would return this season.

“I mean, I think we’re doing everything we can to get to that point,” he said. “It’s tough on me. Just for that fact that I thought it was going to be 15-day stint [on the disabled list] and it would be over and done with and it hasn’t been that..

Buchholz traveled to North Carolina on July 6 to examined by a specialist, Dr. Craig Brigham. He received an injection of anti-inflammatory drugs that day. At the time, he said he hoped to start throwing off a mound within a week.

Ten days later, he’s not close to that. Buchholz played catch at 50-percent effort on Thursday and Friday and today had a large bag of ice wrapped around his back.

“I’m kind of sore,” he said. “But it’s not bad.”

Buchholz is making progress, saying his back feels better now than it did a week ago. But there are no plans for him to take the mound.

"I don’t think there’s really a timeline. Just from the doctors that I’ve seen, it’s basically going to be a feel thing,” he said. “When it feels all right to go, that’s when I’ll do it. It’s something I don’t think I can rush into or try to do more than I can.

"It’s a muscle in my back and until it feels better I don’t think I’ll be able to really get off the mound.”

Buchholz pitched well when he was healthy, going 6-3 with a 3.48 ERA.

“I want to be pitching. I want to help the team any way I can. Me going out there not 100 percent and not 80 percent, I don’t think it’s going to help the team. If I rush back into it, it’ll be something that’ll be here for the rest of the season and I don’t want that,” he said.

“I’d rather be ready to pitch at 100 percent. I feel like that’s the way I can help this team.”

Said Francona: “I don’t know if that has to be the case. I just think he has to be able to go out and be able to pitch every five days and have it not get in the way. Again, just try and use good judgment. I don’t know that anybody is 100 percent at this time of the year.”

Once Buchholz does return to the mound, it could take as long as three weeks before he is ready to pitch in a major league game. He will need a throwing program to regain arm strength followed by a minor league rehabilitation assignment.

So if he got on the mound in a week, the earliest he would return is mid-August.

Well that's disconcerting. Still, I think we can hold down the fort until he returns. This does seem to solidify our need for another starter though. At least he's making progress.

Beckett and Lester are gonna be themselves, Lackey I can still see coming back for a strong 2nd half, Wake just needs to stay healthy and he's an entirely serviceable 4 guy and I'm all for throwing Ace into the rotation until the deadline where we can add a starter. Buch's extended absence is a big blow but I think we have an excellent enough offense and solid enough pitching depth to weather the storm until he returns.

2010 slowly trying to haunt us with the goddamn injuries.

Cut that s*** out man, let's not dwell on this crap. We'll drive ourselves insane.

Buch taking his time to get back is a luxury that this team has. Take care of him, he's supposed to be one of this teams top starters for years to come.

Time to pick up a starter.

Why? We still have 5 starters not counting Miller once Lester returns. All this means is that Wake is in the rotation fulltime from here on out.

Who are you counting as the 5th? The Sox want to keep Aceves in the pen, give Doubront a few more starts in AAA, and Weiland isn't ready yet either.

Assuming both Lester and Beckett return with no lingering affects, our rotation will sill consist of Lackey, Miller and Wakefield. And that's the best case scenario for the next month or so.

Need another starter. This is getting ridiculous. Its not structural yet its keeping him out awhile.

I'd re-MRI him. If it is just a muscle in the back, then they wouldnt have him throwing if it is causing this much trouble. You'd wait for the muscle to heal completely before torquing the back. This is why obliques take so long to heal. They are large muscles, integral in all movements of the core and you need to wait until they are 100% before you start using them again. My guess is that they are going to find something else on him come the second MRI.

He's seen three different doctors and they've all said the same thing.

For now' date=' we have 1 good pitcher. That's not a good thing.[/quote']

Lester's back soon and Lackey and Wake can hold down the tail end until the break. Maybe give Ace a few starts too. We'll have another arm come August, hopefully wearing number 17.

Yeah, I'll eat crow on Wake. He's been extremely valuable this year. I think we'd be in much more Dire Straits (Now look at them yo-yo's, that's the way you do it, you play the guitar on the MTV) without him.

Buchholz: This is the biggest step in the right direction so far

July 25, 2011 04:55 PM

By Nicole Auerbach, Globe Correspondent

Clay Buchholz threw 30 pitches during his bullpen session this afternoon. He was placed on the disabled list retroactive to June 17 with a lower back strain. Buchholz has had a few setbacks over the last month, but today wasn't one of them.

"I think this is the biggest step in the right direction so far in this process," Buchholz said. "I don't feel like there was any hitch in the delivery. It was what I wanted to go out there and do.

"I've pitched with pain before. If it's not overbearing, that's what I'm going to do."

Buchholz estimated that he felt 75-80 percent healthy. He also said he threw all of his pitches -- "mostly fastballs, spun a few curveballs, changeups, and a couple of cutters."

"There's still a little soreness coming off after I threw," Buchholz said. "I sat down for about 10 minutes, did a couple of stretches, and it felt better."

Buchholz said he'd take tomorrow off, throw a light catch on Wednesday, and maybe throw another bullpen session on Thursday. He doesn't have an official timetable for a possible return yet.

"I want to do it as quick as possible," he said. "I think it's going to take a couple of starts to get back in it, facing live hitters."

"I want to be ready to go. If it's the middle of August, that's good. If it's September, that's good, too. I want to try to come back and help this team get to the postseason and work our way from there."

Red Sox manager Terry Francona was encouraged by Buchholz's session today, too.

"If you watched him throw, you would never believe he's missed time," Francona said.

Ya know, this could be a bit of a blessing in disguise. Having a top arm in the MLB extremely fresh for October is nothing to sneeze at. The fact that the Sox have been able to win games despite his absence is fantastic, but it would be even better if he was able to come back and have little to no fatigue in October.

We need to promote some rookies in the offseason and use the money we're shedding from Drew (Reddick) Varitek and Ortiz (Lavarnway) along with cash savings from Cameron, and sign CC Sabathia away from the Yankees.

I ran into CC at a bar in NYC on my business trip this weekend, and I asked him about what he's doing. He said he's pretty sure he's going to Philadelphia next year.
