Always great to get the W, but losing Lester wasnt worth it.... The injuries are ridiculous as of late. Now would be as good of time as any for Lackey to jump out of his slump..... no?? It could happen.....

Papelbon gave up more hits in the game than Bard has the last 4 weeks. And Bard allowed a single himself.

Papelbon has sucked this season at critical times no matter how many saves he has. He was given a 2-hit, 3 run lead and gave it all back but for a blown call at the plate. It's wierd cos he is in his contract year and is gonna leave millions on the table with his erratic performance. BTW, Tek's attempt at a tag looked like he never anticipated a slide...he was high of a tag by almost a foot.

I can't say that I agree with you on Papelbon. He's been much better this year, despite his high ERA he has only blown one save. That's impressive this far into the year, regardless of whether it would be 2 without McDonald and Tek. And I remember someone posting his statistics in high pressure situations and they actually get better as the pressure mounts. I'm sure we all remember a game against Detroit in which with 1 out and the bases loaded in a tie game, he struck out the next 2 hitters the second of which was Miguel Cabrera to keep it tied. I'm sure most of us are very happy with what Pap has given us this season.

Agreed. Papelbon has come up big when he has needed to. He has one blown save. He was fortunate not to have blown last nights game, but let's not forget that that the ump blew strike 3 on the lead off batter who eventually reached base and scored. If Papelbon had blown the save, that would give him the same number of blown saves as the immortal Mariano Rivera. People need to put Papelbon in context.

Save rate might be one of the worst ways to evaluate the quality of performance by relievers. He won't always come in with a 3-run cushion. That said, I'm encouraged in the progress he's made this year. His FIP/xFIP is 2.23/2.35, up from 3.51/3.56 last year. This bodes well moving forward.

If it was a one run lead, they would have taken the bat out of Bautista's hands. Papelbon allowed the home run because he had the luxury of going after him.

Really, they would have walked him and put the tying run in scoring position? For some reason, I doubt that.

I'd argue that Patterson was already in scoring position. Nearly half of Bautista's hits this year have gone for extra bases, and Patterson is pretty fast.

Hell, less than that. Mo's blown 4 this year. And on the topic of Rivera, what makes him so much better than Hoffman or any of the other great relievers? I'm not saying he isn't one of the best ever and he certainly is a dominant closer but how is he so above the rest as everyone says he is? Everybody says "Mo's in, game over." where the same can be said for a lot of closers. How is Mo so much better than Hoffman, Smith, Sutter, or any of the modern greats like K-Rod, Pap, or Bell. Mo is one of the best all time but he isn't absolutely and inarguably better by the wide margin everyone says he is.

They may not have intentionally put him on, but they would have given him a steady diet of offspeed down and away. Pap certainly wouldn't have challenged him with a fastball
