Look. Scutaro and Lowrie have combined to hit .276/.332/.411. Is Reyes a better option? Sure. But he's going to cost more because 1. He's going to be a Type A or B FA, 2. There are way more suitors for his services, and 3. The Mets may re-sign him. Beltran 1. Won't bring a compensation pick, 2. Isn't in as high of demand as a solid hitting, great defensive SS, and 3. won't be resigned by the Mets.

So a package of Miller + Reddick would probably even do the job and get the Mets to eat a good bit of his salary. But for Reyes, you're going to have to spend a whole lot more. Not to mention the fact that the hole in RF is much bigger than the hole at SS.

Ellsbury

Pedroia

Gonzalez

Youkilis

Wow.

The Mets don't want talent in return for Beltran. They his salary picked up. For Reyes they want some prospects, because the salary remaining isn't huge.

The problem with both of these players is that they cost money, and prospects, and they'll cost more than they're worth next year. Reyes is looking for 120+ million. Beltran is looking for 20-30 million and I can't remember the last time he played a full season. Some combination of Reddick/Kalish or Iggy/Lowrie/Scutaro/Navarro are better options.

I wouldn't expect the Sox to sign Beltran beyond 2011.

Beltran is making 19 million this year. Cut that in half, then add the luxury tax. That's the cost of 3 Russell Martins. I have a hard time seeing the Sox make that trade.

How long do you keep a guy on the 25 man roster in the bigs if he isn't ready? Unfortuantely' date=' they are boxed in. It's either promote him or lose him. If teams out their are salivating over him, I'd call the Mets and ask for Reyes in return.[/quote']

At this point, long enough to find out if he's legit. If he isn't, it won't be so hard to keep him in AAA, as any appeal he may have had for other teams will be diminished.

And, please try and be realistic on the Reyes front. Other teams would certainly be interested in him right now if there was no talent lost in the transaction (ie he opted out and became a free agent), but that does not mean the interest is great enough to get a player like Reyes in return.

I think they should see what they have here. If the improvement is real, he has the talent to round out a formidable 4-man playoff rotation (with the way the top 3 look this year).

Not true.

Quick Hits: Beltran, Santana, Bundy, Hultzen

Here are today's links...

The Mets are willing to eat some of Beltran's $18.5MM salary in order to get quality prospects in return, tweets SI.com's Jon Heyman. Approximately $11.4MM is still owed to him this year.

Key terms.

A team without playoff hopes can be more patient than a team with post season hopes. The Sox are hot now, but they can't afford to carry a guy in the rotation if he is not ready. I don't expect that we will blow out the Yanks and Tampa on the way to first place. The last time the Sox carried a pitcher that wasn't ready was 2008 when Buccholz went 2-9 and that cost them the division championship.

You need to understand something about the Mets organization that I know very well from very reliable sources. They have been planting misinformation with the press for a long time. It has become so commonplace that their broader fanbase has caught on. They will plant stories of trade offers made by them that could never be verified and some where the other GM stated that the Mets never made an offer, etc. This happened with the Halladay sweepstakes one year. The Mets claimed to have offered Toronto 4 players. JP Ricciardi denied getting any such offer. The Mets are on the brink of bankruptcy. Dumping payroll is of paramount importance. However, it would be poor fan relations for the FO to disclose that they are looking to just dump fan favorites, so you get a statement like they would be willing to eat "some" salary. That's as honest as they are capable of being. The truth is (and it will be borne out when they move him) the will dump as much of his salary as they can. Prospects are not a concern. He will go to the team that takes the most salary, not the team that offers the best prospect. This gives the Red Sox a big advantage over most teams.

I really hope you're right. I'd love to pick up Beltran. He would help our line up out tremendously. But I think there are other players for Reyes who will trade for and then extend him, whereas the Sox wouldn't do that.
