Well, Dice-k gets what he wants-- to go back to Japan. We get what we wanted-- Dice-k went back to Japan. Everyone wins.

Hmm... that's weird, $50 for bleacher seats at Fenway...

Confirmed: Dice K does need TJ surgery. Told up to Dice when to have it and/or if he wants to see if he can pitch w/tear

How about finding someone better? <_>

another 100 Million D-Kollars or Lacyollars?,no way... i'd set a mini-rotation with Aceves and Wake at least 1 month and see the results.

This could mean we are stuck seeing Wake for awhile holding back the farm system. Pitching just good enough every other game.

Meanwhile in NY, Colon and Garcia are pitching way over their heads and the Yankees are hitting HRs at a record pace. Must be the water.

From the Globe:

If this is it, Matsuzaka was 49-30 with a 4.25 ERA in 106 games (105 starts) with the Sox and 3-1, 4.79 in seven playoff starts.

That's more than $2 million per victory. What a colossal screw up by the FO! There are no excuses. They should have known better. And please don't give me this garbage about how we established a market in Japan, because that's just not true. The Yankees got money from Japan, because they paid for the rights to broadcast the Yankees games. No one is broadcasting the Sox games in japan, because, even when healthy, he plays only every fifth day. The $102 million purchased no rights to market in Japan beyond the rights held by every other major league team. So, let's start out with the understanding that the Sox spent $102 million and got 49 wins in return. Those are some expensive wins.

Next, I believe this was a colossal blunder, because the Sox should have had a better gauge on his talent level and how it would translate to the major leagues. Before the bidding process had been concluded, I listened to Bobby Valentine on the Michael kay show. The Sox should have taken heed of what he said. He said that the stories about him throwing at 95-96 were just not true. He could throw that hard on occasion, but he sat at 90-92 mph. He said that he was not going to be overpowering major leaguers with his fastball and that he was going to have to rely very much on his secondary pitches. Bobby V concluded that he could be a solid back of the rotation guy, but not a #1 or 2. We certainly paid for him like he was a #1 or 2. Theo called him Japan's National Treasure. What a humiliation for Japan if that is true. Maybe they should have talked to someone who had watched him for a few years, like Bobby V.

John Henry should bring this bungle job up at Theo's next performance evaluation when he asks for a raise.

So make a move for Jeff Francis? He's not great, but he'll eat you some innings, has some rebound upside, and he's probably available for a relatively modest price.

I agree. Brett Myers is another one, can probably be had for dirt cheap as well. Either make a move for one of those guys, or try and ride it out with the filth we have in the 4-5 spots now.

I think we'll get much better results from Lackey moving forward. I'm not necessarily expecting a low ERA, but if he can get his personal stuff together, I see no reason why he won't give 6-7 innings and a 4.50 ERA every time out.

he'd better make at least those numbers considering how much he's earning. I think he will, if he keeps healthy.

EDIT: Although, not pretty sure whether the Red Sox paid tons of money for those numbers.

I don't think we'll see Dice K in the majors again. The Japanese National Treasure should be returned to its homeland and put on display in a museum-- right next to their WWII Museum-- both disasters for Japan.

For $103 million plus the lavish extras, the Sox have so far received 105 starts and a raft of headaches.

The team also received no discernible marketing or financial advantages in the Asian market, a myth propagated by Matsuzaka’s handlers after Seibu made him available.

“It didn’t translate to significant off-field revenue,’’ team president Larry Lucchino said in February

From today's Boston Globe. This backs up what I have been saying for a couple of years. The Dice K signing was a bust.

Dice-K was certainly a disappointment, like a lot of the FA pitchers who were available that year.

It does make me curious about how they will fill that position. The FA class for next year is pretty weak. MLBTR speculates about a number of potential trade options. Two that I like are Mark Buehrle and Ted Lilly. Both are consistent veteran guys. Of course, that's basically what Wakefield is too, but I think Buehrle is better.

Fifth starter types shouldn't be hard to find. In a fifth starter, the key attribute should be consistency. A guy who will take the ball every fifth day and keep his team in most games would fill the bill.

He was extravagantly overpaid for a guy who Bobby Valentine had correctly characterized as an end of the rotation starter. If they had anticipated significant revenue streams from Japan, they were admittedly wrong about that too.

Finally, I hope the FO learned a bitter lesson about letting any of their players, especially pitchers, play for their home countries in the WBC. They are paid handsomely to perform in the major leagues. If they insist on playing for their homeland, they should be willing to tear up their contracts. Dice K was never the same physically after the last WBC. It was terribly poor judgment to let him participate in the WBC, and they paid for it with 4 wasted years from Dice K.
