Red Sox prospect Ryan Kalish has a partially torn labrum that might require season ending surgery.

The outfielder suffered the injury diving for a flyball in Triple-A Pawtucket. Kalish had a .236/.300/.309 batting line with no home runs over his first 55 at-bats. With J.D. Drew becoming a free agent at the end of the season, the 23-year-old Kalish has a shot at cracking the Red Sox outfield in 2012. He should be fine by then.

This is a little more info than the sox press release of him having a badly sprained shoulder.

Might as well. No harm in doing so. Although it is his throwing shoulder, and a torn labrum isnt something that heals with rehab. You can strengthen the cuff and see if that keeps the strength and stability of his shoulder. If it was his non throwing shoulder, I'd say he probably wouldnt need surgery. But since it is his throwing shoulder, he's more than likely headed to the OR. Regardless, he's an outfielder, not a pitcher. This is something he should be close to full strength come 2012 should he go under the knife

If he misses all of 2011, it would really hurt his chance of being a starting OF in 2012. They were hoping for some refinement of his skills and good production at AAA and maybe some ML time to fill in for injured players. Without it, I doubt that he is a full time ML OFer in 2012. He's more likely to be a platoon or bench player.

And the market is looking a little thin. If he does miss the entire year, hopefully Reddick's patience displayed thus far this year is legit, because he'd be an attractive internal option. RH and SH options in the market, ones that I thing would be worth entertaining the idea of adding to the roster, are limited to Carlos Beltran and Cody Ross. Beltran is coming off two years of being hurt, and he'll be 35 next year. Last October aside, Ross is meh.

Given his inability to stay on the field, they might be able to get Beltran on a shorter/higher AAV contract....which would be the move if Reddick reverts back to his historical issues with being a hacker.

He'll be 38, and his defense in RF is already quite bad. I'm not sure giving him the biggest RF in the AL to roam is a good idea.

Why not see if Drew is interested in a one year deal?

And does anyone know which shoulder Kalish hurt?

Didn't Drew say this would be his last year? I know he can change his mind, but just something to consider as well.

maybe he goes to left and Crawford moves to RF?

I don't think Crawford has the arm. Beltran has the range, arm, and adds roster flexibility being a switch hitter. Drew and Cameron's contracts both expire, so they'll have the payroll flexibility to make this kind of move.

I realize several players have escalating contracts, but it's pretty clear they are mostly interested in the AAV relative to the luxury tax threshold, so most of those (everyone except for Gonzalez and Buchholz) are already figured into this year's number. I figure Ortiz and Papelbon, two more expiring contracts, are brought back for total dollars that are equivalent to what they make combined this year, assuming they continue to show they are worth bringing back, which they have done to date this year.

Beltran makes the most sense.

The article I read says he's considering it. It sounds like it has quite a bit to do with how healthy he is to end 2011, and how he feels physically. When 2012 ends, he'll be only 36. I'd have no problem throwing him a 1/10 contract.

I may see how Reddick can do in RF if we want to give Kalish an extra year. He's hitting .279/.367/.574 with 4 HR thus far this year through 68 AB, and last year he hit .266 with 18 HR. If he can get some better plate discipline, he could be a perfect player to start out in RF while Kalish gets his year of AAA in.
