Well I was far from wishing injuries on the Yankees' date=' but if they do happen, I'm not going to be upset about it. There's a difference between me hoping and praying that some of the Yankees get hurt, and reporting it as a potential benefit for the Red Sox. I'm sorry that I am optimistic about the Red Sox now that Bartolo Colon is taking the mound every 5th day in place of Phil Hughes.[/quote']

All that is reasonable, I completely understand acknowledging that this helps the Red Sox. I just wouldn't be happy about it (your words).

I would not celebrate Lester getting hurt. I wouldn't celebrate anyone getting hurt... I didn't do it when Pedo' date=' Youk or the other half of your 25 man roster got hurt last year. Put yourself in their shoes, someone like Hughes is pitching to make his money. He isn't gaurenteed a $10 million contract, plus the fact he probably wants to go out there and pitch. He gets to live his dream of playing in a baseball game at the highest levels and he could be seriously hurt. I'm sure you'd be upset if I posted, "Well the Yankees lost the game, but hey at least Ryan Westmoreland can't tie his shoes. Let's open some cans of beers and git r done"[/quote']

Wow. Dead arm vs brain surgery. Nice comparison.

And at what point did I make this personal against Phil Hughes?

Geez. Drama queen.

You wouldn't be happy if Jon Lester hit the 15 or 30 day DL?

Would you be optimistic about the potential to pick up ground in the standings? Does it make you happy when the Yankees pick up ground in the standings? I don't see how this wouldn't be encouraging when looking at it from the Yankees perspective.

you didn't make it personal, but I guess we might have diffence definitions on the word Optimism

I can't speak for the other guy, but no... I personally wouldn't.

I'd be more optimistic about the Yankees' chances, but I would never be happy about an injury. There's a significant difference.

Optimistic from the point of view of the Red Sox chances this season. I don't know how else it could have been taken in a Red Sox forum in a thread that is promoting optimism for the Red Sox season.

Clearly that's what I was saying. No where did I say "I'm happy that Phil Hughes is hurt, I hope he never pitches again and his life is ruined".

It is obviously because the Yankees are not as strong of a team without Hughes in their rotation, and that bodes well for the Red Sox. I'm sorry that I'm happy that my favorite team's rival and the team that has a 3.5 game lead in the standings will be running a sub-par pitcher as their #3 starter for the next 15-30 days.

Maybe that's what you feel, but it's not what you've articulated to this point.

"You wouldn't be happy if Jon Lester hit the 15 or 30 day DL?"

That is, quite clearly, talking about the injury, rather than its effect.

But regardless, all I'll say is that I would never want any players to get hurt. When AdGon got hit on the hand by CC, the first thing I said to the person I was watching the game with was that I hoped he was OK. Same thing when Lester got hit in the knee by a Melky line-drive in 2009 (first two potential Sox's injuries that came to mind that I remember seeing when it happened). Based on what you've said in the thread, I suspect that if A-Rod got hit on the hand, or CC got hit by a line-drive, you'd prefer if they had to go on the DL.

At the same time, I realize that you wouldn't necessarily be happy about the injuries, but rather what they meant for the Yankees and the Red Sox. But where we differ is that I wouldn't want any player on any team to miss any time. To each their own.

EDIT: And, unfortunately, that's probably better than the way a lot of fans view injuries to rival teams (especially Yankees/Red Sox).

Get your feelings hurt much?

I never wish anyone hits the dl or gets hurt. What I'm saying is that once a player hits the dl, I'm optimistic about the potential for the red sox to make up any ground that they lost through poor play.

This thread is clearly about "optimism" as it relates to the Red Sox and their quest to make it to the postseason this year. Taken in that context, it's perfectly acceptable to post what he posted, as this information, that a key component to the success of your competitor is going to be missing for some time, would naturally lead to the assumption that your chances for success have increased.

Taken generally, it's in poor taste, but this isn't a generic thread about "optimism".

When he dies, his family will make a killing from charging people to piss on the casket. What a world class douche.

Haha. he's just a straight up tool that wears purple lipstick.

I'm glad that trade never happened. Imagine how dirty we'd all feel having to root for that guy.

If the Red Sox weren't a religion, I'd change teams if A-Rod was on the Sox.

Serious or joking? Honestly can't tell.

Why do you hate him as a person?

He seems like a prick. A real irritating guy. Like the kind of guy you'd meet at a party that does nothing but brag about themselves. Talking about how much money he makes and the great car he has and making snide remarks about people. Clearly hitting on your girlfriend while you stand there and his girlfriend is right next to him with a brain dead look on her face clearly too scared to get mad at him because she knows he'll belittle her in front of everyone at the party and then beat her when they get home and he's drunk. The kind of guy with a painting of himself in his bedroom.

At least that's how he comes across to me

So you hate A-Rod as a person because of what you think he might be like if you ever met him. Gotcha.

Yeah, pretty much. I could be wrong, probably am. Hope I am. But signs point to otherwise

Most stories I've heard paint him as a complete douche, so I doubt you're wrong. Plus, you'd have to be a douche to opt out of one 250 million dollar deal in order to extort your team for an even bigger one.

All this because he plays for the New York Yankees. Why does someone so insignificant to your life cause you to feel this much hatred? He's a baseball player.

Our rotation matches up brilliantly over the next week. Buch - Beckett - Lester all throw @BAL, and then we go home and see DiceK - Lackey - Buchholz throw vs SEA.

Career numbers against BAL:

Buchholz: 5-2, 2.98 ERA, including 15 shutout innings in 2010 and a no hitter in 2007.

Beckett: 6-3, 3.53 ERA, 14 IP, 2.57 ERA in 2010. Career 2.94 ERA @Camden Yards

Lester: :shock:13-0:shock: 2.33 ERA.

Career numbers against SEA:

DiceK: 2-1, 4.11 ERA. I think he'll throw another gem, though.

Lackey: 13-9, 3.64 ERA. In 2010, Lackey was 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in 16 IP.

Buchholz: 1-0, 2.92 ERA. In 2010, Buch was 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in 7 IP.

So in our next 6 games, we only have 1 pitcher who has posted a 4+ ERA against the team he's facing, but if he stays on track, I'd say he'll be fine. LAA and TOR both have much better offenses than SEA, so if he can contain them, here's to hoping he can do the same with SEA.

A-Rod is indeed a douche. I've heard plenty of stories from first hand accounts. Cab drivers who he doesn't tip, walking into a starbucks and having his assistant order him a coffee while he ignores everyone in the room and stands in the corner and texts. Just to name a few. I could keep going.

Everyone forgets he tried to cheat in the 2004 ALCS with the gloveslap
