We have a bunch of threads bitching and moaning. I've done my part too.

Here's a thread for reasons to be optimistic.

My first entry:

2001 Oakland A's.

Started the season 2-9

Ended the season 102-60 and won the Wildcard*

1914 Boston Braves

Started the season 2-9

Ended the season 94-59 and won the World Series

1935 Detroit Tigers

Started the season 2-9

Ended the season 93-58 and won the World Series

1991 Minnesota Twins

Started the season 2-9

Ended the season 95-67 and won the World Series

1974 Pittsburgh Pirates

Started the season 2-9

Ended the season 88-74 and won the Division*

1951 New York Giants

Started the season 2-9

Ended the season 98-59 and won the NL Pennant*

*These teams started 2-10 and still did fine!

Awesome thread. I've been thinking about doing something like this myself.

Here's my top 5 pieces of optimism

1) This team is healthy. Albers is the only hurt player on this team right now, and that is saying something.

2) Lester is having a good April.

3) Did you see Beckett's start on Sunday? If that didn't give hope for this pitching staff, nothing will.

4) Pedroia is playing at a MVP level again. After insane family issues in 2009, and injuries in 2010, every single thing I've seen him do has amazed me.

5) No team has ever come from 0-6 to start the season and won the World Series. Well, no team has ever come back from being down 3-0 in a playoff series either.

Damn you! It's a thread for optimism damn it. We need a pessimism thread.

I'm all for optimism ,but a 1900's team.will not help me think the 2011 redsox will win the series it's all up to them to turn this ship the write way

I think a lot of people here remember the 1991 Twins and the 2001 A's.

Can you read thread titles? Apparently not.

atleast start a thread that would really make some one have Optimism .not some bs records from the past that will not make some one cheer up

Three of the teams that have made it to the playoffs in the past did so in a year that ended in a "1".

1951, 1991, 2001.

This is 2011.

You're missing the entire goddamn point. Wow.

Another point: Many teams go on a 2-9 stretch or worse during a season and do fine, it's just a lot more glaring and seems worse when it is at the start. If this was going on in early July there would be less panicking.

i do too' date='but what do they have to do with the 2011 redsox???????????[/quote']

Perhaps you missed the point of the thread.

They also started 2-9 and probably had a lot of pessimistic fans after 11 games. They utilized the same number of games that the Red Sox have left to put together a very, very good season.

Do you really not see any purpose of spending the time to look up the experiences of previous teams? It isn't predictive, but it does say that teams that end up being good can start 2-9.

There's really no point in writing with you. You're trying to poo-poo an optimism thread. Go away.

no im not .i just dont get the point of the bringing up past teams record's into this.its not going make me feel better about the sox

Then get out the thread. Geez. How Dense can you be?

Showing what those teams did shows that this team obviously has the same potential to pull off the same thing and be just fine. It shows that going 2-9 to open a season does not dictate how an entire season will play out. Of course a lot of teams have started out 2-9 and gone nowhere, but that's because those were teams with mediocre talent. The teams mentioned in this thread were TEAMS WITH GOOD TALENT JUST LIKE THE RED SOX ARE, AND STARTED THE SAME WAY, AND ENDED UP FINE.

I should be sleeping right now getting ready for school tomorrow and I will after I give you some facts off the top of my head.

2004 ALCS - The whole world thought we were done. f*** them.

Mothers day vs the O's 2007 - Bottom of the ninth and no one saw this coming but we won. 6 runs.

2008 ALCS vs Rays - A 7 point deficit vs the Rays and we came back and beat them. Had we lost that game series ova!

It goes on and on and on. I'll be back with more tomorrow but for now ta ta.

Career batting stats - Red Sox

Crawford = .296 BA .781 OPS (Currently .163 BA, .386 OPS)

Youk = .293 BA, .889 OPS (Currently .167 BA, .685 OPS)

Ellsbury = .288 BA, .746 OPS (Currently .194 BA, .645 OPS)

Their stats thus far this season won't hold up throughout the entire year. When they start hitting, we start winning. I'm betting it will be soon.

To speak to how crazy this season is, Youkilis has a .426 OBP.

That's higher than he's had in any complete season before. That's with a .182 average.

It is reasonable to hope that Youkilis gets on base LESS than he has so far, if it means he hits the ball more often. That's crazy. And proof that we're still well within the domain of the dreaded small sample size.

He seems to of lost confidence in his hitting or something, walking like Manny did with the White Sox last year.

Walks are always good but I agree, he needs to try to hit more.

My 5 reasons for optimism:

1. Carl Crawford may get lost on his way to the ballpark.

2. Jerrod Saltalamaccchia might be traveling with him.

3. John Shellackey might be following him.

4. Dice-K Matsu-SUCKA might be deported.

5. The start of the 2012 season is only 11 and a half months away.

The Sox definitely still have a chance. They just need Youk, Papi, and Salty to start hitting. Also, if Salty becomes a better catcher then the Sox will be on the road to recovery. Also, it could be worse, we could be 0-11. Plus Tampa is 3-8 (not much better) and the Yankees aren't even in first! I don't think Baltimore is going to stay good for the whole season.

Giving up hope 11 games in huh?

I admit, this made me laugh.

Let's refrain from pseudo-psycho analysis after 11 baseball games. He's taking good cuts, and he's hitting ball with some authority, but it's not finding a hole right now. He's hit a handful of balls really well that unfortunately were right at fielders. He's using the same approach he's always used, and he shouldn't change it.
