So... they should start swinging at stuff outside the zone because the umpire sucks? I mean, I suppose that if you know the ump is calling a generous zone, you adjust, but the ump doesn't appear to be generous as much as inconsistent. I don't know how you deal with that as a hitter.

The general idea is to widen your perceived strike zone as a hitter with two strikes to prevent being called out looking on a BS call. Every one of these hitters has been taught that from an early age.

OK, but the bad call is still essentially the umpire's fault. And really, the call to Saltalamacchia wasn't close enough to pull the trigger even with a wider zone.
