I'm no fan of Dice K, but if they did that they wouldn't have a 5th starter. And they need a 5th starter more than they need a crowded outfield.

Depends on what you see going forward out of Felix Doubront. As effective as he was out of the pen last year I wouldn't be too shocked if he managed to put up a creditable 5th starter performance this year for Boston if called upon.

As for an RHH off the bench, if they really do decide Scutaro's their starting SS, Lowrie will be available to provide that service. I wouldn't mind too much bringing McD back though, he was really solid last year and looking at his career that may not be a fluke.

I agree about keeping Darnell absent a trade, but his OPS vs. lefthanders last year was .821 vs. 1.015 for Beltran his last full year (which happens to be he same as his injury shortened 2010 number). I know it doesn't work this way, but if if ad his 10 homers against lefties to Ortiz' homers against righties, you'd get 40 homers out of the DH slot if they platooned.

As to the trade I suggested, Mets might be willing to eat some money.

As to losing our 5th starter--I'd take my chances with Wakefield and Doubront as a mid-season plan B unless they could deal for one.

Truthfully, I'm quitting on DiceK.

We already have one

Two of them, since McDonald is part of the 40-man roster, yet people talk as if he's not part of the team anymore.

Cameron punishes lefties, and should be healthy to start the season, so how do you justify the following series of events:

1)Trade Dice-K to Mets for Beltran, exceeding the luxury tax and creating a hole in the rotation.

2) Move Doubront from the bullpen to the rotation, creating a hole in the bullpen.

3) Scramble to find another lefty for the bullpen.

Doesn't make any sense at all.

Also, are we talking about the same Dice-K? Because the one i know posted a 4.69 ERA in 153 IP last year.

Given the fact that the average 5th starter in this league has an ERA+ much closer to 50 than to Dice-K's 93 (and the fact that neither Doubront nor Wakefield is a safe bet to duplicate those numbers) i don't see any reason to get rid of him.
