Do you not want Crawford there because you don't think he would do a good job or because you don't think he's worth the money?

No way in hell he is worth the money he will be receiving this off season. He is not a $100MM player imo and he is going to blow that number out the water.

So who do you think they should get for LF? Kalish?

As the options dwindle, anyone for Manny?

The number I keep hearing is 2/20 for Ordonez in Detroit. I think if the Sox bite the bullet and give him a third year, they can get him. 3/30 for a .300 hitter is better than 7/125 for Werth.

Werth's offer was so ridiculous that Boras didn't even bother asking other teams if they wanted to match. You can't blame the Sox for not seeing that coming, because no one really did. Just because Werth got a massive contract, does not mean that he deserved it, and it certainly doesn't mean the Sox could/should have predicted it and signed Holliday last season.

Yes, yes it was. He's a very comparable player to Jason Bay, and yet he got TWICE as much money. There is no way anyone could have foreseen that.

They were on record saying that he would go back to Philly unless they got Holliday $. I don't think $100 million was out of the question. I agree that $125 million was ridiculous.

Holliday-- 7/120, career .931 hitter, signed at age 29. Very good defensively. Has been the picture of health his whole career.

Werth-- 7/126, career .848 hitter, signed at age 31. Solid defensively. Has missed chunks of his career with injuries. Will decline with park factors.

The Nationals overpaid by a truck load because they had to. No big stars would come there unless they completely blew everyone else out of the water, and that's what they did.

I agree. In light of Werth's contract, Holliday's contract is not unreasonable. Plus, the Sox could have put the $16 million that they flushed down the toilet on Cameron toward Holliday's contract.

I misread you earlier, I thought you meant the Sox should have forseen the Werth deal. I think the Sox figured Cameron would have hit 25 home runs, and played good defense, as he did in just about all the ten seasons prior to when they signed him. They definitely weren't expecting their #1 offensive prospect--who happened to be an outfielder-- to be struck by tragedy either. Still, I believed it back then they should have gone with Holliday over Lackey also, but I think Lackey does a lot of very important things for this team--most specifically, giving innings, wins, and protecting the young arms, all of which he did as well as anyone could have hoped last year.

On another note' date=' there is still one other big RH bat LF still available... Manny Ramirez back to Boston?[/quote']

As much as I loved Manny and would be all for him returning to Boston. I see no way in hell it happens, especially how he left town.

I threw out the Manny idea several posts ago. No one seemed interested.

Actually, it looks more like we all thought you had said "Maggy".

Ordonez/Guerrero/Manny/Jermaine Dye. Picking up one of these guys on the cheap, using them to give Ortiz time off against tough lefties, and in stadiums where they can handle the field. Get it done.

I think Maggs is the best choice of the names you had presented, but you can see that the Manny thought had occurred to me.

Almost like the Yankee rationale behind Marcus Thames.

I loved having Thames here, but you have to take into account defense. Thames was so bad in the OF that he was relegated to PH and platoon DH duty by season's end. There were regular season games where his defense alone cost us in crucial moments.
