David DeJesus to A's

The A’s acquired David DeJesus from the Royals for right-hander Vin Mazzaro and left-hander Justin Marks, the teams announced today. Royals GM Dayton Moore says Mazzaro will join the team’s rotation and Marks will start the season at high Class A Wilmington.

Mazzaro, 24, posted a 4.27 ERA in 122 1/3 innings for the A's this year with 5.8 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9.

Is Crisp a free agent. If so, this move probably means that he will not be returning to the A's.

Not exactly great material. Either the Royals just looked at the ERA, or the prospect is really good. The return must be pretty good if the Royals were willing to trade him now, instead of waiting for his value to rise again.

Mazzaro has big league stuff and put up passable numbers as a 24 yr old. He is gonna be a back end starter for the Royals and has a lot of upside, so I like the deal from their end if it was only Mazzarro. The other prospect has high K numbers but has had some tough luck thus far in the minors. 1 yr of DeJesus for these 2 is not a bad deal for a team that could use some depth past Greinke in their rotation

Mazarro is there to prevent them from being forced to promote Montgomery or Lamb too soon. Moore is loading up on stopgaps to hold a roster together until he can cycle in the younguns properly rather than the Allard Baird method of "Oh hey now, he's had a good month in AA, he might concievably be ready to play, pop 'im in!"

 

Allard Baird made me look dour and pessimistic about prospects and prospect readiness. They've got a good crop of young players right now, ruining them will be a great way for a GM to get fired -- especially Moore who's essentially staked his career on this wave of prospects at this point.
