I'm not interested in the slightest in trading Clay Buchholz for one year of Adrian Gonzalez when he might hit free agency at the end of this year and the Yankees won't be in a position to compete for his services.

Besides which, the San Diego Padres just outperformed their way to within spitting distance of a playoff berth and emotionally, I doubt they're willing to deal their franchise hitter right now when they might be able to load up offensively and try again with a fair expectation of success.

What about Buchholz

And stop right there. Trading Buchholz at this point it just an exercise in futility. No way in hell they trade Buchholz for someone that can be had in FA next season. Trading Buchholz is laughable.

The Padres need offense, not pitching. Their pitching staff is #2 in the mlb and their offense is #22. Trading their best hitter for pitching isn't going to help them unless its a multi-team trade where buch goes somewhere else.

Probably the most interesting trade piece we have who is actually a trade piece, from the Padres' perspective, is Ryan Lavarnway. I'd rather see if he can hack it as a catcher in the bigs for this team though.

The Padres are going to require MLB ready offensive talent and powerful talent at that. The sox dont match up right now. If Rizzo comes out and smokes the ball in AAA for the first half of the season, then they might

The sox arent waiting for him. I highly, highly doubt the sox sit around and wait for a 21 yr old kid who hits in AAA to take over a position that requires elite offense. Even if the kid comes up and hits .250 with 20 bombs in his first yr, it is below what they need. There are 3 elite 1Bs who are FAs after 2011, and my bet is the sox end up with one of them, assuming they dont resign Beltre. Maybe they keep Rizzo and break him in slowly as a DH, intermittently at 1b, see if he can fake it in LF. But there is no way the sox wait for him as a starting 1b.

By "wait" for him, most liklely that means a short term solution like Dunn/Konerko, and then let Rizzo fill in when he's ready.

i think we have a very real need to add another starter this offseason/address the back of our rotation. i'd do that before we pick up another outfielder. i think beckett will have a better year next year but i'm not so sure about lackey or daisuke. if an outfielder gets hurt at least we have plenty of depth at th eoutfield positions and we coulde isnert someone like kalish, nava, reddick or mcdonald if we sign him. not so for our rotaiton. it's inevitable that one of our starters will get hurt during the course of the season and i don't want tim wakefield starting 20 games for us again next year

cliff lee would be tremendous and if we got a team to eat half of daisuke's salary, trading daisuke and signing lee would only be a $16 million hit to our team salary, but there are other options out there that are at least worth considering like Erik Bedard, Jake Westbrook, Hiroki Kuroda, Bronson Arroyo or Justin Duchscherer. obviously not everyone's going to like all of those options and i'm sure someone's just going to dismiss my entire point here by saying something like bronson arroyo sucks but oh well

Dice-K getting traded if probably more likely then Lackey. Although I'd rather Lackey gone.

NWIH Lee signs in Boston. He's either a Ranger or Yankee IMO.

After Lee the SP market is bleak. Millwood and Webb could be interesting 1 year options.

As far as the trade market goes for SP. I don't think there is much known to the public right now. One of the TB starters could be available, but I would imagine those really aren't realistic options. Zambrano? No thanks. Grienke is debatable. I'm still hoping that Felix gets snubbed for the Cy Young and rages against his FO.

I think the rotation's fine. Beckett and Lackey had down years, and I'd expect Dice-K is where he is talent-wise. Even if a starter misses extended time (which is likely), I'd imagine the FO has a lot of confidence in Doubront, Bowden would be fine as a spot starter and Tazawa's going to be ready by spring training. Fixing the bullpen should be the number one concern, I think Theo would cringe at shelling out $5 million a year just for a spot starter (unless he moves Dice-K).

They can keep the exact same lineup and win 100 games with a real bullpen. We've needed to fix the bullpen for three years now. Enough stupidity already.

You got it, bullpen is where it is at. They proved this year they have the offense (With Beltre) to compete, they just need a better bullpen and better performance from Beckett and Lackey.

I dislike factual inaccuracy.

Boston Red Sox bullpen ERA by season:

2008: 4.01 (11th in the Majors, 7th in the AL )

2009: 3.80 ( 8th in the Majors, 2nd in the AL)

2010: 4.24 (24th in the Majors, 12th in the AL)

There was no need to fix the bullpen "for the last three years". They were good in 2008, really good in 2009, and awful in 2010, which is why there is a need to fix the bullpen now.

This site doesn't have enough bandwidth for me to type up that story.....

The point is, a very smart friend of mine told me "You're here for the wrong reasons, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy your time". Sound advice.

That's fair. I know it is probably unreasonable at this point. But I can hold out hope ;)

I dont know about that. Lackey turned in a bad season, but he at least showed he would take the bump and give innings. Burnett was getting shelled in the last 2 months which got him pulled early too often. The only thing on Burnett's side is that he has 3 yrs left instead of 4. Both guys are untradeable and I wouldnt even broach the topic. Both have the capability to be dominant starters, and selling now would be selling incredibly low.

I love the way teams dish out these huge contracts to pitchers who haven't necessarily even been that good, and then are the GMs somehow shocked when the results are less than optimal?

That's the thing. These second tier guys who have been #2's at best are getting ace money.

But that really isn't the case. #2s get 14-16 million. Aces get 19-23 million. Any true ace, like Halladay, Lee, Sabathia, Santana, is going to be worth 33% more than their #2 counterparts. Maybe the gap isn't big enough, but its definitely there.

Dusty Brown, Kevin Cash and Robert Manuel have all been removed from Boston's 40-man roster, reports WEEI's Alex Speier. The three players will all be eligible for free agency five days after the last game of the World Series.

A little piece of Dojji just shriveled and died...
