This is huge news. Will He come back in 2012 strong? Strasburg needs TJ Surgery and he is done for the rest of this season and next.

MLB:

The Nationals announced in a conference call on Friday that right-hander Stephen Strasburg has a significant tear in his ulnar collateral ligament and will likely require Tommy John surgery.

But he was the real deal can't miss prospect? This is what can happen when a guy moves to the next level. I've seen lots of can't miss guys in 40 years, and many of them miss for one reason or another. Sometimes the guy has no heart. Sometimes the guys body can't take the rigors of a major league season. Sometimes it's something else. Major league talent alone is not enough. There's no such thing as a "can't miss" prospect except in hindsight.

If you followed these things, and please don't get your knickers in a twist because I don't mean this as an insult, you'd have seen a lot of people saying there should be caution in drafting Strasburg because his mechanics screamed future injury.

I bet if he stayed in the minors he still gets hurt. But if you look at the bright side when he gets back Harper will be coming up.

I know, but I don't think they expected it this fast. Did he have even 50 innings under his belt?

He could've gotten hurt in a bar room brawl, or in an altercation with a cop, or at a funeral. All have ended promising careers.

Mark Prior redux, minus the actual MLB experience and impact?

This is unfortunate, though there's part of me that felt like he was too good to be true. TJ surgery can have big impact in terms of making him healthier for the longterm, but I have a hard time believing he will be sitting at 98-100 when he returns. He might "only" throw as hard as Justin Verlander now.

he had 68 mlb innings and 55 minor innings.

That franchise must be in shock. When they scratched him from an earlier start, I thought it was due to shoulder stiffness, not an elbow issue. Am I remembering incorrectly?

it was but he tore the muscle Against the Phillies on the 21st. After a pitch he threw he came up in pain. Sportscenter has been showing it non stop. i would rather hear about Farve right now.

Nats are one of those teams that when I see them play, I usually feel a little bit sorry for them. This news must be devastating to those guys, and even more so for Strasburg. What a bummer!

It's funny because before the Nats drafted him, there was a lot of discussion about his mechanics (remember the upside down W?) and that it would eventually lead to a UCL tear, which incredibly, is the exact injury that Strasburg has.

Yeah, everyone saw that coming really, the issue came down to who wanted to believe it and who didn't.

Another San Diego pitcher with the awkward, W-shaped delivery they prefer down there goes down with ligament damage. Sooner or later they'll sane up and stop teaching kids to throw that way. But then it's California, so who knows?

You mean a "M"? lol

But ya, a huge blow to the Nats. Good thing he didn't pitch in the All-Star game or this could have happened sooner (or maybe it would have been better that way, ie. recovery time, etc.).

Mark Prior redux

I was thinking the same thing.

Mark Prior

Kerry Wood

Jason Isringhausen

Todd Van Poppel

Brien Taylor

Bill Pulsipher

Ben Mcdonald

Steve Avery

There is no such thing of "cant miss". There is such a thing of "what if" however.

Its called scapular loading. I think it looks more of a M than a W.

This is a great website that details pitching mechanics. You are right too, some people call it the inverted W.
